Daryl Shuttleworth [left] and Ron Gabriel In a scene from Drift which opened at the Blyth
Festival on June 24. [Colleen McGuire photo]
Drift is unusual theatre
By Alan Rivett
For theatre-goerslooking for a not -so -
ordinary production, the Blyth, Festival's
presentation of Drift fits the bill as an
unusual piece of theatre.,
Drift, a play by Rex Deverell; leaves all
the conventions.of tradidonal theatre to the
wind to flirt with new, untried visions in
this production which originally premiered
at the Globe Theatre in Regina in 1980.
This brooding, introspective play is set
during the Depression and the Second
World VVir and centres around the life of
Stevie! (played—by Laurel Paetz), an
attractive, courageous women who has
immigrated to Canada from the Barbados
during the 1920s.
From the outset of the play, the audience
iearns,Stevie co -exists as.a character in the
play and also as a character which is.
brought to life on the stage by "the writer"
of a book about her life during the hard
times of the Depression. ;
Oddly enough, the writer (played by
Daryl Shuttleworth), is not merely a static,
omniscient character, but he becomes part
of the play, as he asks questions about the
pasts of the characters which jump off the
pages onto the stage, He also becomes a
narrator of the play, guiding the characters

through memories, their triumphs and
.their struggles which make up the play.
The play follows Stevie's "drift" to a
worker at a fruit farm, where she meets her
best friend Betty (played by Heather
Edson), her relationship and later marriage
to farm owner Tom (played by Pet
Smith), and her friendship with a poet and
her one-time suitor Sam (played by Ron
Gabriel). It's how each of the characters, in
their own way, come to grips with the
Depression, the Second World War, and,
ultimately, each other which gives the play
its appeal.
The juxtaposition between "the ..writer"
and the characters adds another dimension
to the play, especially the relationship
between Stevie and "the writer" which
features an ironic twist near the conclusion
of the play.
However, Drift isn't entirely gloom and
doom. Some fine comedic acting by Ron
Gabriel as Sam gives the play the needed
comic relief elements. Also of note is the
stage design by Jules Tonus and the
lighting by,Louise Guinard which adds to
the starkness of the play.
Most of all, it's a play about relation.
ships which somehow urges the audience
to understand the human costs of the
Depression and the Second World War.
