Contractor to inspect standpipe
The village's engineering firm, B.M.
Ross and Associates of Goderich, advised
council the inspection of the standpipe will
be done by Alfred Philips, a Toronto con-
tractor, at a cost of $600. The inspection
will take place from June 24 to June 26.
Council intends to ask Mr. Philips if he can
suggest a firm to do the required re -
greasing of the standpipe after he has com-
pleted the inspection.
Council has decided to proceed with
plans to map the entire water distribution
system in the village. The map will include
all water mains, valves and hydrants. The
project will be undertaken by B.M. Ross
and Associates at a cost of approximately
$1,000 to $1,200. "Utility mapping should
have been done years ago," said Reeve
Herb Clark.
A permit to build a driveway was
granted by council to Donald England of
Campbell Street subject to distance re-
quirements of the Ministry of Transporta-
tion and Communication.
Council received a letter from the Salva-
tion Army asking for a contribution from
the municipality. Council decided to give
COUNCIL
$250 to the charitable organization.
Property Chairman John McLeod
presented council with a number of
estimates from area plumbing contractors
for the proposed renovations to the base-
ment
aserent of the Lucknow Town Hall. Reeve
Herb Clark said the rough estimates will
be used to determine the total cost of the
project, which he expects to be approx-
imately $42,000. Tenders will be called in
the near future for the renovations ex-
pected to begin this winter. Council is also
exploring the possibility of receiving a 50
per cent government grant for the project.
Council gracefully declined a challenge
from neighboring municipalities to send
an eight -man team for the tug-of-war con-
test at the Port Albert Sesquicentennial
Celebrations in August.
The residents at Pinecrest Manor observed Senior • Citizens' Week with their annual
wheel-a-thon Friday when the residents, assisted by students from Lucknow Central
Public School, raised money for the Alzheimers Society of Canada. Some 66 residents and
students participated in the event which Included a stop at the Superscoop for an ice

Wheel-a4hon raises money
for Alzheimers Society research
In support of senior citizens the
residents of Pinecrest are raising funds for
Alzheimers Disease during Nursing Home
Week, June 16 to 20. This is a
dehabilitating disease that affects over
300,000 middle aged and elderly Canad-
ians which can't be ignored any longer.
All funds raised during Nursing Home
Week will be donated to the Alzheimers
Society of Canada. Pinecrest residents held
their Wheel-A-Thon on June 13 since the
school children help. They would be busy
every day of Nursing Home Week since it
is their last four days of school.
These kids may have called on you with
their pledge sheets. All the money isn't in
as yet but the final total will be published
later in the paper. There were a total of 66
people on the Wheel-A-Thon this year.
They appreciate the co-operation of the
staff at the Super Scoop for letting them
disrupt their busy schedule when they all
landed there for ice cream cones. This year
the Post Office staff supplied punch and
cookies, for the residents on the way back.
In 1984-85 the Ontario Nursing Home
Association raised over $90,000 for medical
research into Alzheimers Disease, thanks
to public donations.
Alzheimers is a brain disorder causing
memory loss and serious mental deteriora-
tion. There is no known prevention or cure
for the disease that is the fourth most
common cause of death among Canadians.
Men and women from age 40 onwards
can be affected by Alzheimers, with people
over 65 being the most vulnerable. The
ailment may last from two to fourteen years
after onset. Significant memory loss is the
first symptom, and as the person grows
more forgetful, other mental capacities
deteriorate until routine daily tasks become
impossible to perform. Eventually the
person requires constant care and atten-
tion.
Alzheimers Disease was once thought to
be the result of senility or of simply
growing old. It is now recognized as a
specific disease for which, in time, medical
science will discover the cause, treatment
and prevention.
Extensive research is presently being
carried out in Ontario. Donations can also
be made at the nursing horse. Anyone
donating over $5 will receive a pen with
Alzheimers printed in gold and blue.
Tickets for a draw on a six piece wicker
bathroom set are also available at the
Nursing Home.
