HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1986-05-28, Page 15Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, May 28, 1986—Page 15 Neighbours hold shower for bride-tobe in township hall Saturday afternoon was a most pleasant day for Mary Eadie when neighbours and friends gathered at the township hall at Holyrood to honour Mary with a bridal shower. Wedding bells, streamers and summer flowers gave a nice welcoming touch. Betty Smith was chairperson and she extended a warm welcome to all present. Readings were given with good advice to the bride by Joan Murray, Wilma Elliott, Bess Maulden. Piano numbers were provided by Donna Johnston. A contest organized by Hilda Ackert called Pass the parcel, was won by lucky gals Eva Burt and Sara Haldenby. Edna Boyle played the wedding march and the bride and her attendants Cheryl Cottrill and Connie Eadie took their places. Mary Boyle read a self composed address to Mary. Helping with the gifts were Shelley Johnston, Reagan Carruthers and Erin Eadie. Placing the gifts was Imelda Murray. Donna Johnston made the dainty hat with the pretty bows and Mary modelled it. She thanked everyone for coming and for all the gifts that she will find so useful in their new home at Beamsville. She also in- vited everyone to a trousseau tea on Satur- day next at the home of her parents. She al- so expressed appreciation to the neighbour ladies who had arranged the shower. A delicious lunch was served and all enjoyed a social time. WMS The president Betty Bushell wecomed everyone to the home of Barbara Bushell for 'the May meeting of the WMS. A hymn was sunand the purpose repeated. The roll call, a Bible woman and a fact about her, was answered by 11 members and one visitor. Tiny Robertson gave the devotions on the work of women and based her talk in Priscilla. She told of their devotions and sacrifices in the life of the early church. Nina McDonald had the study and divided the group into three to study the biographies of three native men and asked each group -to answer questions on spirituality and Christian rejection. She read a poem and the legend of the Creation of Earth. Psalm 104 was repeated in unison. Work the Night is Coming was sung and prayer by Nina McDonald closed the meeting. A delicious lunch was served by Barbara Bushell and her helpers. A successful auction sale of plants, crafts, and baking was - held after the meeting. The proceeds go towards the Supply Fund Allocation and to send our Sunday School children to the Childrens' rally at Kintail in June. People report Rev. Merelyn Letson, Mrs. John Visser and Jennifer Collins took some of the Sunday School pupils to the Children's Festival at St. Georges Church in Owen Sound. Those who went were Tara Thacker, Tanya and Crystal Haldenby, Krista and Karah Wall and Tracey and Tim Visser. All really enjoyed the day. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Nicholson and Lois travelled to Wallaceburg during the week to be with Allan and Brenda's family. They also attended the funeral of Brenda's fath- er in Sarnia. Friends here extend their sympathy to Brenda and Allan and family at this time. [Intended for last week] _ Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert MacDonald and Ricky of Kincardine visited with Mrs. John Barr recently. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barr of here spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Gary Fair and Jason of Kincardine. They all celebrated Jason's first birthday. Visitors with Winn'fred Percy and Bill and Brian Percy were Mr. and Mrs. Don Bertrand and family o Simcoe, Margaret Bushell of Goderich and Mr. and Mrs. Morley Bushell of Wingham. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ormond of Milton Maritimers pay visit to area Julie MacDonald of Fredricton, New Brunswick came to visit her dad Jim MacDonald. She stayed for a week with the Dalton and MacDonald families. Julie and Jim then returned by car back home to New Brunswick. Seventy-six, Grade 7 and 8 students were confirmed on May 7 in St. Peter's Church in Goderich. They came from the parishes of St. Joseph's church of Kingsbridge, St. Augustine's parish, St. Mary's of Lucknow and St. Peter's of Goderich. A community shower was held for Donna Drennan in Kingsbridge. A large crowd attended. Sister Maureen Dalton from the Mother House in London visited with Cletus Dalton and family for a couple of days. First communion was held at St. Joseph's church in Kingsbridge on May 18: Ten children of the parish received their first communion. Everyone enjoyed the get-gether after church in the base- ment. Cathy Cook of Kintail held a Tupperware Party at her home on Thursday night. Tommy and Dennis Hogan spent Satur- day night with Ray and John S. Dalton. Jennifer and Cathy Dalton spent Saturday night at Rhonda and Tammy Hogan's. On Sunday, May 25, several teamsters from Huron and Bruce Counties as well as horses under saddle gathered at Gibson Park, Amberley. Over 90 people enjoyed a 21/2 hour, trail tour which included a beach drove and a drivers' competition in which men and women participated. A picnic lunch was enjoyed after the days riding. Some of the teamsters and riders were: Clete Dalton, Marvin Sott, Leonard Kerr, Donnie Rae Scott, Leo Murray, Doug Scott, Eric Drennan, Jack MacKenzie, Angus (Newf) MacDougall, Brian Black, Frank Murray, Russ Mackie, John S. Dalton, Bob Wright, Bradley Black, Joel Wright, Don Sowerby, Arnold Young, Sally Wright, KINTAIL ;1' Harold Smith, Alex Simpson, Donald Alton, Neil MacKenzie, Duncan Thorborn, Ralph Lilmore, Bayne Maclennan, Lorne MacDonald, Jim Scott, Rick McQuillin, George Gibson, Karla Hogan, Maria Milt- enberg and their families enjoyed the days activities. St. Joseph's school in Kingsbridge celebeated Arbor Day May 14 with Father Ed Dentinger C.R., teacher Barb Eddy and students attending. This 12th year of planting a silver maple tree, donated by Bernardine Kinney, is in greatful memory of former parishoners who have rendered recognition to the parish, such as Morgan King, one of the first eight immigrants who came in 1839. This year the tree was dedicated to Father Raphael O'Loughlin C.S.B., born in Kingsbridge May 7, 1916, who celebrated his 70th year. Ordained in 1942 in Toronto, he was assigned to Honstess, Texas area to teach. In 1944 he volunteered to join the first Basilian Fathers Medicoa Mission in Texas and also Mexico City. Father Ed Dentinger C.R. gave the blessing of the tree. Students recited a poem and sang a song. Refreshments were served. The St. Joseph's school 1986 graduating class invited the Kingsbridge area seniors to an annual card party. The card party was held in the auditor- ium and hosted by teacher Mr. Phil Antonius and students. Seven tables of guests and students attended and refreshments were served. The seniors are grateful for this enjoyable event. spent the weekend with Pastor and Mrs. M. Christensen of here. Relatives and friends were guests at the Pentecostal Church here on May 9 for the wedding of Ron Berner and Janice Schmidt. Pastor M. Christenson officiated. Ladies from the Kinlough Presbyterian Church attended the Presbyterial in Belmore Presbyterian Church. Eleanor Knott, missionary on furlough from India, was the guest speaker for both the afternoon and evening meetings. Those attending from here were: Betty Bushell, Nina McDonald, Gladys Robertson, Isa- belle Thompson and Erlma Haldenby. Mrs. John Linton (Karen Dawson) St. Albert, Alberta, has been visiting her mother Mrs. K. K. Dawson and father, who is confined to Goderich Hospital this past week. Visiting the Roberts family at the manse this weekend was Karen's mother Mrs. Vivienne Earl and niece Jennifer Earl of Melrose Park, Illinois. Rev. Robert Roberts has been at the United Church Conference in Sarnia. Sunday morning's service was led by Dianne Park, assisted by the youth group and Explorers. Marie Park is a patient in University Hospital in London since being admitted on Sunday. Brad is staying in Goderich with his sister Pat and Gary Johnston. Winners at the Seniors euchre on Wed- nesday evening were: high lady, Louise Brindley; low lady, Marie Park; high man, Raymond Haggitt and low man Tim McNee. There were 12 tables in play. Jim and Margaret Errington, Elsie and Roger Pannabecker, Elsie's son Brian Dyck and Father Simon Schroeder of Abbots- ford, B.C. visited at Niagara Falls over the holiday weekend and called on Moses J. and Ella Shetler and family at South Dayton, New York. Elsie's father has left for home via rail, visiting relatives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mel Jones has been a patient in Wingham Hospital this past week. Also hospitalized is K. K. Dawson at Alexandra and Marine in Goderich: About 35 family members and friends honoured Allan Pentland of North Bay, on his 75th birthday on Sunday, May 18 with a dinner in the United Church served by the Willing Workers. Attending was Allan and hiS wife Irene; son Brian and family of ; ,!North Bay; daughter Shelly of VancOuver; sister Margaret Pritchard of Goderich; brothers Laverne and wife Dorothy,'; Benson and wife Lena, of London; Frank, Wilfred and Marjorie. The afternoon gathering was. held at the Senior Citizens Centres. The Dungannon Senior Citizens held a successful flea market; bake sale and Chinese auction on Saturday, May 17. They wish to thank all the people who donated articles. The Senior Centre is sporting a new front entrance door, with a donation from the sale of the Orange Hall and other dona- tions.
