Room 4 exploring animals
The Room 4 Alphabet is still exploring
animals - tadpoles, in fact, thanks to
Tammy! We're setting up a frog center
with books, filmstrips, a "tadpole tank"
and a learning game, /made by Mrs.
McDowell.
We're also working on a Bookworm unit,
reading books we enjoy and working on
book activities - Books, Books, Books! Tony
Stecca and Matt Thomson are the "Special
Me".
This week in Miss Mathers' Grade 1
class we had a visitor. Mrs. Deb Heslinga
was here to talk about Dinosaurs. We
wrote a story called, Dinosaur Stew.
We are learning about money. We have
been playing store and we are now ready to
help our moms do the shopping.
On Thursday, May 8, Miss D. Bennett
from Hullett presented her slides of
Australia to Grades 3, 4 and 7. She
recounted many enjoyable adventures of
her trip.
Mrs. Ottewell's Grade 3 class produced
some videotape presentations on their
hobbies and invited parents to see them.
The Grade 3' class is involved in, and
enjoying, the individual novel study. Mr.
Ottewell found balloon pieces with cards
enclosed which came from Lansing, Michi-
gan and landed on his farm.
The Grade 3 class wrote to four
different students who released these
BROOKSIDE
balloons and they are hoping for replies.

Librarians organize conference
-The Bruce County Librarians' Associa-
tion is organizing a Young Authors'
Conference to be held on Tuesday, June 3
in Walkerton at the District Secondary
School.
This event has been sponsored and made
possible by the generosity of the Bruce
County Board of Education, the Kincardine
Branch of the Legion and the two public
school federations the F.W,T.A.O and
O.P.S.M.T.F.
Over 400 young writers, bringing
their own hand made books will attend
the two sessions. The southern end of the
county will send 200 delegates in the
morning and 200 will attend from the north
in the afternoon. At these sessions, young
authors from kindergarten to high school
will meet together ib small discussion
groups to share their writing experiences
and read from their own 'books.
AT THE
Later, they will meet in the gym to hear
the guest speaker, Gordon Korman.
Gordon wrote his first novel, This Can't be
Happening at MacDonald Hall, as a grade
7 student. He has gone on to become one of
Canada's most successful and best liked
auhtors and at 22, he has had 10 titles
published by Scholastic. His talk and
reading should be inspirational to many
aspiring Bruce County young authors.
After the conference, the books brought
by the student delegates will be on loan to
the County and will go "on tour", to all our
school libraries for all our students to
enjoy.
