work on community park
More work has been done at the
Lucknow Kinsmen, Community Park as the
local Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs continue
their commitment to this area of commun-
ity betterment.
Playground Equipment
The Kinsmen held a work party at the
site of the new ball park and recreation
area on May 10. Two new pieces of play-
ground equipment, which had been
purchased by the Lucknow and District
Kinette Club, were installed along with the
erection . of a sign commemorating the
opening of the park as well as recognozing
the various organizations who assisted the
Kinsmen with the project.
This follows the work done last fall when
the infield stonedust was scraped and
removed to allow for the replacement with
new stonedust. This has settled extremely
well and now helps rate the ball diamond
as one of the best in the area.
Approximately $1,400 was spent on the
above mentioned improvement.
Tennis Courts
The Kinsmen Club has also been updat-
ing the playing conditions of the Lucknow
Tennis Courts which they spearheaded the
construction of in 1979.
New nets were purchased and installed
in April. William Adamson and Son has
been contracted to repaint the lines on the
asphalt playing" surface. Almost $500 was
spent on these renovations.
A motion was passed by the dub in April .
to match dollar for dollar the funds raised
for the . Luci ow and District Sports
Complex fund from, the- annual Kinsmen
Skate-a4hon which was held in March `of'
this year. The- skaters raised a profif:of
$1,570.36 in pledges in the Kinsmen spon-
sored event and . the club has contributed
the same amount from their own accounts:.

Lucknow Central Public School. This event "
SPECIAL
Fry
is sponsored by the Kinsmen and Ontario
Provincial Police to make the students
more aware of bike safety and the rules of
the road. Trophies are awarded to the top
point earners.
The week of June 16 to 22nd will mark
the time of the 12th annual Lucknow Kin
Summerfest. As well as a 32 team men's
and 16 team ladies' slow pitch tournament
there will be a Monte Carlo Night on

Saturday, June 21. Plans areunderway for
the beef barbecue also on Saturday.

project of the year and it , is ."hoped that

Amnesty launches campaign
To the Editor,
Because of continuing abuses of fun-
damental human rights in South Africa,
Amnesty International, South Bruce Group
97 is participating in a campaign to ensure
that genuine reforms will take place.
Extensive violations of human rights by
the South African authorities have been of
concern for many years. Recently they have
escalated in the wake of widespread black
protest against apartheid. Prisoners of con-
science are imprisoned and banned.
Thousands of suspected government op-
ponents have been detained without trial
and many have been tortured. The death
penalty is imposed frequently with over 100
executions carried out each year.
Amnesty International is calling on the
South African Government to take the
following measures for the protection of
basic human rights :
1) To release immediately all prisoners of
conscience - those imprisoned for their
political or religious beliefs, color, sex,
ethnic origin, language or religion, who
have neither used nor advocated violence.
In South Africa, these include people
sentenced to prison terms, detained without
trial, imprisoned as conscientious objectors,
banned or banished and imprisoned under
the so-called pass laws, which are
TO
CR.
discriminatory on racial grounds and lead
each year to the imprisonment of many
thousands of black people.
2) To abolish immediately the pass laws
and all legislation which leads to imprison-
ment on the basis of race.
3) To release all political detainees
without delay unless they are brought to
trial fairly and promptly for criminal
offenses.
4), To guarantee that trials of political
prisoners are conducted according to inter-
nationally recognized standards of fair trial,
and to review cases of previously sentenced
political prisoners with a view to their
release or retrial if their trials did not con-
form to these standards.
5) To curb police powers of arbitrary ar-
rest and detention without trial and
withdraw the provisions which allow people
to be held for indefinite periods of incom-
municado detention.
6) To act immediately to stop torture and
