The Lucknow Sentinel, 1986-05-21, Page 16Page 16—Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, May 21, 1986 Battered women get help at women's Centre and House The Women's Centre and Women's House of Bruce County serve women in crisis in Grey and Bruce with 70 to 80 per cent of the women who come into the centres, come because of abuse to them- selves or their children. Many women across the twin county area find getting to the centres a major difficul I, , either because their family si ion limits access to a car or because we are a rural community with larger distances between services. The two houses have jointly developed a network of volunteer drivers to help women get to and from the shelters. A call for volunteers last fall brought an overwhelm- ing response from concerned people. In the first three months of the project's full operation, the initial group of 40 volunteers has driven nearly 60 people more than 3,000 km. to and from the two shelters for counselling, support groups, crisis service and residence. The sheer size of Grey -Bruce means that there are still areas of the two counties where there are no drivers. This spring, the transportation project hopes to locate volunteers willing to help with occasional driving in the following areas: North of Wiarton, Dundalk area, Markdale/ Flesh- erton and the Kincardine area. <yrr,•:.. •.;y • ri :>,.. , ii '!lir.•. rr EJ i4''r {'7 ii' The playoff champs in the Kinloss Bowling League were the Elms.
