Art show in. Southampton
An event that will take place this
summer should be of considerable interest
to all local artists as well as members of the
general public. The Fifth Annual Bruce
County Art Show and Competition will take
place at the Bruce County Museum in
Southampton between the dates of August
2 and September 7, 1986.
The Art Show Committee Chairperson
said that "This is a good opportunity for
our local artists to become better known
and they will have also haveanopportunity
to sell some of their paintings to a wide
ranging public".
As in the past, the competition will be
limited to full and seasonal residents of
Bruce County and the subject matter of the
works of arts is to be representative of the
County.
The three winning entries will be high-
lighted in the Show and will become the
property of the County. During the
exhibition these three entries will hold a
place of- honour and will, in the fall, be
placed on permanent exhibit in the Bruce
County Administrative Building in Walker-
ton along with the winners of 1982, 1983,
1984 and 1985.
Prizes will be awarded to the three
artists and non-monitary honourable men-
tions will be made at the discretion of the
judge.
In order to qualify for entry in the show
the work of art must be either a painting,
watercolour or pastel, have a minimum
unframed size of 18 by 24 inches and be
suitably framed. The first prize award will
be $300, second $250 and third prize will be
$200.
All artists may submit up to three works
of art to the exhibition and can obtain
registration forms by contacting the
Museum in Southampton. To be eligible
for the exhibition and competition all works
of art must be in the hands of the Museum
during the week of July 20, 1986.
Special appeal launched
The Lung Association for Bruce, Duffer -
in and Grey Counties is mounting a special
appeal beginning May 15 to raise funds to
expand the new Lungs Are For Life School
Program which was introduced in many
areas last fall. Our goal for this special
appeal is $15,000, states Tom McAsh,
Fund Raising Chairman.
The program 'has received enthusiastic
response from school boards and teachers.
The format and presentation of the
program is exciting and innovative and the
material''c ontained in the four basic kits for
primary, junior, intermediate and senior
students, provides lesson plans, audio-vis-
ual aids, hands-on activities as well as
follow-up ideas for the students.
Youngsters from kindergarten to Grade
3 enjoy the movie Octopuff in Kumquat,
where a very bad Octopuff tries to get the
people in the town to smoke. After seeing
the movie, the children enjoy the time
spent learning how to take care of their
lungs.
The school program is designed to main-
tain the interest of all ages. A ten year old
. blows into a 6 -foot plastic bag, which
shows how much air is in the lungs.
There's a lot of talk about peer pressure
and how it's O.K. to say "No" when
offered a cigarette. Older students look at
films and learn about the immediate effects
of smoking on the body through machines
which measure carbon monoxide, heart
rate, skin temperature in the fingertips and
hand steadiness.
"Your generous donation is vital", says
Mr. McAsh. "You are contributing to the
future safety of our next generation. There
are thousands of children we must reach if
we are to prevent the ravage of lung
disease in the years to come."
Voice for life May meeting held
The May meeting of Wingham Voice for
Life was attended by 12 board members,
five of whom are new to the executive.
A new president, Mr. Jim Bakelaar, was
unanimously elected for the 1986-87 term.
Board members expressed gratitude to the
outgoing president, John van den Assem,
for his extensive and selfless work on
behalf of the pro-life cause. All other
officers for the coming year remain the
same as last year. They are as follows:
secretary, Michael Herrington; treasurer,
Richard Campeau; education chairperson,
Sally Campeau.
A TV ad entitled Aren't They Forgetting
Someone?' 'is being shown on CKNX and is
being well received. This ad reminds the
viewers the fetus is fully human and shows
various stages of its Aevelopment. The ad
will be aired over the neat 12 months. Fetal
models are available to' schools and other
groups. They are .being used by schools in
Huron County and were recently used by
the Wingham Branch of the Huron County
Health Unit.
Ten members of Wingham Voice for Life
plan to attend the Walkerton Right to Life
annual dinner and rally on May 10. The
speaker, Joe Borowski, is well known for _
his campaign to bring the legal implica-
tions of abortion before the Supreme Court
of Canada, so:that the right to life of the
unborn will be defended by the law of the
land.
Sweet Trick
Use Ontario maple syrup,instead of
sugar, next time you want to sweeten
whipping creams, says Foodland Ont-
ario Specialist Anne Hanson. Add three
tablespoons (40 millilitres) of , maple
syrup to a 250 ml carton of whipping
cream and beat as usual.
