Ms. Maclntyre, a first-year kinesiology student at the University of Waterloo, explained aerobics are geared to increasing the heart rate while doing a series of continuous exercises. She says she started the course simply because of a need for this type of program. ins the community. . Need 'I saw a need• in Lucknow because there was not much for women. to "do for exercise and fitness," she says, Since the aerobics classes started . at the town ,ball on April 23, the response has' been •"excellent", she said. So far, a total of 25 women have signed up for the begin- ners classes and 13 in the intermediate classes, ranging in age from 16 to 50. As for her personal involvement in aerobics, Ms.-Maclntyre " says she has participated in a number of extra -curricular exercise classes offered at the university, and has also taken a fitness instructors course;. " Fraser," Calisthenics The classes begin with a number of warm-up exercises before attempting the movements associated with aerobics. While doing the aerobics workout, each participant is allowed to go at her own pace to avoid over-exertion. Calisthenics are also performed to work various parts of the body followed by a cooling down and relax- ation period to end the class,. Overall, the beginners class is 45 minutes ' in length while the intermediate class will exercise for an hour, she said. For the ,beginners_ classes, she .has introduced .a relatively new conceptof aerobics called low impact aerobics, . She explained ;this form of aerobics uses the. arms rather than the legs to keep the heart rate tip This cuts down on the amount of jogging required, thus preventing injuries to the legs, - and especially to the knees. Although the classes are 100 per cent women, she emphasizes that men are also welcome to come out and participate in the classes, "It was advertised as a co-ed course, so they can co nie<out if they want," ;sive said. • The classes, meet at thetown hall on classes with the beginners `class starting at 6:45 pan. and the intermediate class. atm_ 7:45 p.m. The intermediates meet again on Tuesdays and Thursdays at7;45 p.m. while the beginners have another class on Thursdays 'at 6;45 p.m. x nding cvrrttee.
