additional space, they purchased the dry
goods store of Emma McCluskey on the
south side of the main street in 1952. For
many years Miss McCluskey's business
had been known as 'T'empleton's.
Mr. and Mrs. Ashton expanded the
children's wear, and assumed the dry
goods, millinery and ladies' wear in the
new location. In later years the business
was expanded to include a basement
department 'and later a men's wear was
opened in the adjacent store to the west.
The business grew to be one of the most
prominent clothing stores in this part of the
country.
Janet Ashton died in September of 1970
at the age of 53. She had been his full time
associate in the business all' through those
years.
Over the years, Lloyd was active in
community events. He was a member of
Lucknow United Church and served in
several church offices, a charter member
and past president of the Lucknow and
District Lions Club, a member of Old Light
Masonic Lodge, a supporter of minor
sports and a coach of minor softball, a past
president of the Lucknow Business Associ-
atiun and a constant promoter of the
business activities of the village.
In January 1972, Lloyd was, married to
the former Eileen (Johnstone) Laviswho
had been an employee of the Ashton' store
for 19 years. They continued to operate the

business until it.was sold to Syke and Jim
Sutherland in 1973.
Lloyd and Eileen have the spent the
winters in Florida in recent years and his
health has caused him to be hospitalized
for three weeks from March 12 until April 4
in Hollywood, Florida.
Mr, Ashton had been affected by
Alzheimer's Disease in recent years.
Besides .his wife Eileen, he is survived
by one daughter Beverley and her husband
Donald Thompson of Lucknow, and one son
Dr. Fraser Ashton and his' wife Catherine
of Aylmer, Quebec; also five grandchild-
ren, Susan Thompson of Kitchener, Nancy
Thompson of London, Donalda , Thompson
of Lucknow, Antoine and Stefanie;Ashton
of Aylmer, Quebec,
The funeral ;service was :eonduete&:a_t the
MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Dome
in Lucknow on Friday, May 9 at 2, p.m.
conducted by Rev. Warren. McDougall of
Lucknow United Church. Burial was in

Pallbearers were Charles Webster,
Leonard _MacDonald, Donald MacKinnon,
Bud: Thompson, Lorne Phillips, all of
Lucknow and Wayne Ruttan of Priceville.
Flower bearers were Jack Ferguson of
Listowel, Anson Ruttan of Fordwich, Cliff
Pyke of Gorrie, Paul Finlay of Lucknow,
Antoine Ashton of Aylmer Quebec.

The search for two missing Kitchener,
residents was resumed on Thursday, May
8 by OPP helicopter from Brampton with
two., Kincardine . Detachment members
acting as spotters • ;
The `Lake Huron shoreline from Kincar,
dine to Little Pike, Bay "was.; searched;
resulting in the discovery of . the missing'
boatt and motor found washed ashore on 'a
small island about one mile north of
Oliphant. No trace has been found of Byron
Arthur' Simmons,: age 52 or. Julie Schneid-
er, age 45 w'ho were last seen o.c :pying

this boat near G.S.B. outfall at 2 p.m. on
November 1.
They and the small craft were the subject
of an -extensive air-sea search late last fall
_which included a military search and
rescue aircraft from CFB Trenton, a
"—Canada Coast Guard Cutter from Goderich,
OPP helicopter "and skiff and 'a shoreline
search on ';foot.
The shoreline will be searched period-
ically by OPP Force helicopter and skiff in
hopes of ' discovering more evidence
gelatingtothe, disappearance of Simmons
and' Schneider." _
