The Lucknow Sentinel, 1986-04-30, Page 15Stanley reports on visit to Ecuadr
At the end of February of this year the
students of Lucknow Central Public School
had a special visitor at their school. it was
Heather Stanley, a native to the Lucknow
area who tookpart in the Canada World
Youth Program in August 1984. She stayed
for three and a half months in Canada with
her Eduadorian counterpart Lilia. Then the
two girls left for the South American
Country of Ecuador to stay for three and a
_half more months in a town called Caluma.
'Here Heather and Lilia lived with their
new famil , . a large one indeed! This family
include r ncies, Aunts, Grandparents,
Cousins, and Parents, a total -of over fifty!
As well as having large families,
Ecuadorians have other different cultures
from us. They love to dance fast! Heather
even let us hear some of their native music!
The official language . of Ecuador is
Spanish, so Heather learned this language.
She also taught the children in her village
English at a school.
Heather also worked in a medical centre
in Ecuador. It was a rare experience and
good opportunity for her to learn, about the
health care system, as she is now attending
Conestoga College training to be a nurse.
In Ecuador Heather found the food
rather interesting. It was mainly bananas
and rice. She drank alot of fruit juices and
coffee, as her new family's farm grew this
coffee.
Heather and Lilia still have a special
relationship. They keep in touch and
exchange letters every once in a while.
When Heather was asked would she go,
again if she -had the chance, she said yes
but it felt good to back home.

My Cats
My cats names are Susie, Sammy, and
Stubby. Sammy is the playful one. When
she "first wakes up she's real playful. Susie
crys so much. Even when you just touch
her she cries! Stubby isn't so playful. She
is a minx cat. She has no tail. Stubby is 14
years old.

My Dog
We bought a Doberman and named him
Magnum. On the way home we stopped at
McDonald's and he ate our food. We put
him in a box but he kept getting out:
Magnum grew really fast and when 1
played outside he jumped on me. He got so
big that we had to give hirn away.
Jonathan Austin.
Muffy and Tuffy
Muffy and Tuffy are my two teddy bear
hamsters. They always wrestle. They run
on their wheel all night. They live in a
cage. My hamsters sleep . in the day and
play all night. I bought them in Toronto a
month ago. They like to eat sunflower
seeds, hamster food, lettuce,, and parsley.
They store their food in their cheeks and
will hide it in their cage for later. They are
light brown and have a white stripe around
their stomach. Muffy and Tuffy are always
clean. Their fur is soft and fluffy.

The hardest thing about
being young ;
The hardest thing about being young is
you can't go out when you want. You can't
do what'you wantfto do and you, can't stay
out late at night. 'People always say you're
too young for this andru'°re:too young for •
that. It just gets sickeneing. 1 HATE being `'

Scary adventures on rauyn
When I came home from school, one
rainy night, nobody was home. So I
decided to go for a walk: I walked five miles
and then it started to pour. I ran looking for
the first house, but there was no house on
that road. I ran -for shelter. A, BIG BLACK
BEAR. came out on the road,1 and started
chasing me. I saw a small cave, Iran for it.
I got on niy hands and knees and crawled
in. It was dark. Lucky for me I had my
flashlight, I turned it on. There were a lot
of cob webs, so I had to clear them away.
saw two caves that had split so I took the
leff one. I wish it hadn't. It was spookier
thanthe other one; I started to go back, but
something .called t e. So I went back a long
way. Then I came to the darkest place. It
was a room. I went in. Hooked around and

I saw a lot of bats, I ran as fast as 1'' could. I
finally got out of the cave, but there was
the bear.. So I ran back in. When I came to
where the cave split I took the right one.,
But whenI came to the end of it I: saw some
bats flying around, They saw me. So I had
to be smart, I ran out where the Bear was
and the bats saw the bear and the a Bear saw
the bats. They never moved, They were all
