Student compares Stowe and MaePhai
The reason I am writing this report is to
compare two Canadian Women. The two
Canadian women I . will be comparing are
Emily Stowe and Agnes MacPhail. The
criteria will :be comparing these two women
on is personal facts, accomplishments
and contributions.
Emily Stowe .is eldest of six daughters
and was born in, Brantford., Ontario. This
lady had always been, determined to be
someone and had faith and courage in what
she was trying to accomplish. Emily Stowe
taught school in Norwich, Ontario begin-
ning at the age of 15. After teaching at
Norwich she went to Brantford and became
the first woman Principal. Emily Stowe
also organized a Women's Liberation Club
and also got women to be allowed 'into
Canadian Medical Schools. She also helped
make the law so womencan vote and:. have
other rights just like men. Therefore" I.think
Emily Stowe played a major role in
women's liberation.
Agnes MacPhail was born in Grey
County, Ontario. Agnes MacPhail attended
teacher's college. She was also involved in
many community activities. This lady was
very determined at her work.: Agnes
MacPhail was the first woman to run for
office and actually get into the. Canadian
Parliament. This lady improved jailing
conditions and made a major breakthrough
in parliament and_ set standards that
women can do anything men can and win!
Therefore I think Agnes MacPhail proved
that if you work hard enough at something
you will get it.
I> think that Emily Stowe was an out-
standing woman. She was able to get a law
so women could vote and have equal rights
as men,. Agnes MacPhail also contributed
something -very important to ; Canadian
History, she broke through history so
women could -run for office. If I had to
choose between these two women I would
choose Emily Stowe because I think maybe
if she hadn't done what she had for women
we still .might not be able to vote and have
equal rights like we ;do today.

Speeches require
careful planning
Speeches this year were very good.
Everyone l think put seine . extra thought
into writing speeches. Four people were
picked from our class to go up on stage,
they were all very good. I like writing
speeches, but it is not my favorite topic in
school. Picking a topic seems to be the
hardest -.thing about speech writing. You
try to pick out a .topic that you • find
interesting and that the audience will
enjoy, and not get bored. It takes so much
energy to construct a speech. It's not
something that just comes like that.
Careful planning.. and: organization does it
all. It takes a lot of courage for a person to
go up and say,a„ speech in front of gazing
people, courage to stand and say a 3 to 5
minute speech. It nilist of taken a Jot of
courage out of Jackie Robinson, a famous
black baseball player: to go out:.in front 'of.
crowds and crowds of white p. eopie.
Getting teased: and called names, just
because he was black. He had courage, as a
aublc speaker, have, Courage and faith in
Yourself', and your life, will go On.
