Lucknow UCW groups discuss native Indians
Unit 1
The April meeting for Unit 1 of the
Lucknow UCW was held in the Fellowship
room of the church with 11 members and
three visitors present.
Leader Grace Gibson welcomed every-
one and read a poem entitled Blossoms in
Springtime.
Mrs. Wes Ritchie accompanied on the
piano for several Easter hymns. The
rollcall was answered by all present with a
verse with an Easter thought.
Several conveners reported and offered
help for catering to a future banquet. The
birthday jar received donations in honour
of Mrs. Bruce MacKenzie's recent birth,
day.
The committee of Jean Conley and Mrs.
Al Irwin conducted the devotional part of
the meeting capably prepared by Mrs.
Harvey Webster who could not be present.
Mrs..Irwin read a suitable spring poem
relating to the magnificent beauty of God's
creation.
This was followed by the scripture
reading and prayer by Jean Conley.
The meditation entitled Life was read by
Mrs. Irwin. Treasure life in yourself and
you give it to others; give to others and it
will come back to you.
Mrs. Gordon Cayley presented a film on
Indian children, showing them seeing so
many books and pictures written about
them being wrong and presenting a great
injustice to them..
A hort discussion ,followed and Many
hoped that pioper books could be chosen
for our children, to read, and not, show the
Indian as always being the bad guy.
Grace Gibson read a bodit review of I
heard the, Owl tall my name, capably,
prepared by Mira.; Webster and proved
most ;interesting.,
Mrs, Irwin Closed with prayer.
• * Unit 2
, ,Unit 2 met April 1 at 2 p.m. at the home
or Mrs. Clarence .Greer, with Mrs;--Nernon
Hunter presiding. She opened' with an
Easter poem, He's Back in the Land -Of the
Living, followed with prayer.
The minutes were' read and approved.
Ten members answered the rollcall with a
verse from the Easter Story and the refer-
ence. Mrs. Hackett reported there are 16
paid members. The offering was taken and
dedicated by Mrs. Hunter. We sang Happy
Birthday to Mrs. Hackett and the jar was
passed. Mrs. Dexter reported on the cards
she had mailed during March and a card
was signed for Mrs. Neil MacKenzie who is,
now living at Princess Court in Kincardine.
Mrs. Freda Button volunteered -to help
Mrs. Bradley with the flowers during
April. Mrs. Mary MacGillivray asked for
food and help for the bowling banquet
which will be in the church on April 18.
Mrs. Bradley gave her report. from the
Bruce Presbyterial which was held in
Kincardine on March 3. She also gave two
articles from the Study Book, Where Do
You Fit in the Circle? The Circle is a‘ very
special and sacred meaning for .masy
native groups in North America. She also'
told of the experiences of a native Indian
girl, who lived in the city of Winnipeg.
Mrs. Bradley presided for the program,
and she opened with a reading Spring and
Easter, followed with the hymn Welcome
Happy Morning. Mrs, Eldon Henderson
read the Scripture from the Easter Story.
Mrs. Alex Hackett and Mrs. Peter Cook
gave the meditation on the Resurrection,
followed .by prayer by Mrs. Bradley.
Mrs. Dexter gave a reading 0 Glory it's
April, and Mrs. Bradley gave an Ukranian
Folk Tale on the origin of the Easter Egg.
All sang hymn Christ the Lord is risen
to -day. Mrs. Hunter thanked the hostess
and those who presented the program, and
she gave the closing prayer, followed with
the benediction. The committee served hot
cross buns and a social time was enjoyed.
Unit 3
Unit 3 of Lucknow UCW met at the home
of Mrs. A. Lemoine on April 1 with 13
members answering the rollcall with a
verse on Easter.
President Mrs. G. Walden opened the
meeting with an Easter reading.
The' cominittee of Mrs. J. Arnold, Mrs.
J. Pritchard and. Mrs. Lemoine conducted
the devotions, Mrs. Arnold read a poem on
Spring, Mrs. J. Pritchard read the
scripture. A short skit was put on entitled
What, does the cross mean to you? with the
members taking part.
Mrs. Lemoine read an Easter poem and
Mrs. J. Arnold closed with prayer.
Mrs. Peddle took the, study book and
introduced a book I heard the Owl call my
name. There are two copies available for
anyone wishing to read it.
Minutes were read and adopted and the
treasurer's report was given. There was
one birthday..

Unit 4
Unit 4 of the Lucknow United Church
Women met on April 1 with an attendance
of twenty-one. The rollcall was answered
with an Easter verse.
• Mrs. Ken Cameron presided for the
devotions with the theme Easter. Mrs.
Alex Andrew read the Scripture. Mrs.
Cameron gave the meditation, The Cross
Confronts the Modern World, followed by
prayer by Mrs. Stuart Conyer.
film entitled, Unlearning Indian, was
introduced by Mrs. Gordon Cayley. A
discussion followed on the stereotyping
suffered by the Native Indian.
Mrs. Clarence Ritchie read from the
mandate an article on sterereotypes, The
Walls of an Invisible Prison, where the
writer, an Indian woman, told of experien-
ces she and her family had suffered. The
unit was divided into three groups and a
discussion followed.
Mrs. Bob Finlay read an interesting
article on a Quebec Crea Indian Band,
which found a Japanese -owned company
which helped start a local industry making
replacements for cedar -strip freighter
canoes. A poem, Eternal Spring, was read
by Mrs. Ritchie.
Mrs. Harold Greer, unit leader, presided
for the business. 'Reports were given by
treasurer, Mrs. Ken Cameron; citizenship,,
Mrs. Stuart Collyer; supply, Mrs.- Charlie
Davies; community friendshhip, ,Mrs. Cliff
Crawford, Amnesty; Mri.- Gordon Cayley;
social functions, Mrs. Lloyd Whytock.
A report of the Presbyterial held at
Kincardine was given by Mrs. George
McBride. Following a contest, the 'meeting
was closed and a social time enjoyed.
The provincial government labours under the impression that the onlyproblem
with health care- is doctors who extra -bill. Hence the Health Care Accessibility Act
Its very name professes to deal with accessibility But it doesn't. The Ontario
government is simply not addressing any of the real issues that will make health
care in our community more accessible. Since the government isnot;
your local doctors will.

Master Jeremy William Noble of Clinton*.
formerly of Dungannon, died at Clinton
Public Hospital on Saturday,' March 29, 1986
in his ninth year.
Astudent at Clinton Public School, he was
a son of Terry Noble and the former Pat
McGee of Clinton. He was born on August 14,.
1977 in Wingham.
He is survived by his parents, a sister,
Angela Marie and a brother, Justin Andrew,
both at home, his grandparents, Harold and
Eileen McGee of Nile and .Olga Jean and
Murray Noble of Vancouver.
A private family service Was held M the
McCallum Funeral Home in Goderieh on
Monday, March 31, 1986, conducted by Rev.
Robert Roberts of Dungannon United Clair;
ch.
Pallbearers Were Doug Fines, Dana
Boree, Tim antand Jim Sanderson.
Burial in Dungannon Cemetery._
