HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1986-03-12, Page 8Page 8—Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, March 12, 1986 Friendship is theme for Lucknow UCW meetings Unit # 1 The March meeting for Unit 1 of the Lucknow UCW was held at the Sepoy Apartments with 13 members and seven visitors in attendance. Mrs. Gordon Morrison chaired the meeting in the absence of the leader. Mrs. Morrison opened the meeting with a verse on Friendship, the theme for the meeting. The hymn What a friend we have in Jesus was followed by the rollcall, A friendly verse, answered by all. in attend- ance. The ' mutes were read and approved and treasurer's report given.. Several committees reported for the past month and Mrs. Edna McDonald and Mrs. Gordon Morrison volunteered to visit shut-ins in March. Mrs. Leonard Goodhue donated a quilt top to the unit. Plans for a bus trip to Cape Croker and Saugeen were discussed. Several invitations were read from other churches to attend their Thankoffering services. The meditation entitled Qualities of true Friendship by Mrs. Morrison and Gertie. Henderson was well prepared with Mrs. Raynard reading several Scriptural pas, sages. Phyllis then introduced the guest speaker Rev. Letson, keeping with .the motto, telling about so many .instances in the Bible relating to Friendship, which is not the experience of selecting a few friends. Jesus intended us to reach out to everyone, caring for other people for their sake, and not for our own benefit. Her message left members with much food for thought and reaching out to others less fortunate will prove a blessing to us. She was presented with a small gift in appreciation by Mrs. Henderson. Music was enjoyed by all with Jean Conley playing and singing Shall we Gather at the river. Phyllis spoke briefly and had. a short question period on the study book of the Native Indian, followed by the hymn Bless be the tie that binds and Mrs. Henderson closed with a prayer; Mrs. Raynard Conducted a Biblical contest 'while lunch' wasprepared,. grace was sung and a social hour ' enjoyed. '. Unit Unit 2 of Lucknow U.C.W. met in the activity room at Pinecrest on Tuesday, March 4 at 2 p.m. Mrs. Vernon Hunter presided and welcomed the ladies. The theme of the meeting was Friend- ship, and following the call to worship th, members sang a hymn, with Mrs. Peter Cook at, the piano. The minutes of the February meeting were read and approv- ed. Twelve members answered the roll call with a Bible verse and its reference with the word Friend. The offering was taken and dedicated. Mrs. Anna Dexter was the only one with a March birthday. Mrs. Greer reported for ..the community friendship committee that 43 visits were made during February The social func- tions committee report was also given. Mrs. Dexter volunteered to help on Sunday for the lunch after the church service. Helen Thompson reported for the steward- ship committee and she spoke on the Stewardship of Time. CHURCH A hymn was sung and Ellen Cardis read the scripture from Proverbs and Mrs. Eldon Henderson gave the prayer. Mrs. MacGillivray gave the meditation on friendship. She also gave an article from the .study book on the Indians. Mrs. Lorne Eadie and Helen Thompson gave readings. Mrs. MacGillivray played a piano instru- mental and the meeting closed with a hymn followed by prayer. Grace was sung and the committee served refreshments and a social hour follovved. Unit 3 Unit 3 of the. UCW met at the home of Mrs. Ross Shiells with 12 members present who answered roll call about Lent. The programcommittee was Mrs. Wightman and, Elizabeth Robertson. Mrs. Wightman read a poem and hymn 87 was sung. Mrs. McPherson read scripture Matthew 16: 13 26. Meditation was by Mrs. Wightman and Miss Robinson led in prayer. Mrs. deBoer sang a solo accom- panied by Mrs. Kilpatrick. The study book on the Life of the Indians was given by Mrs. G. Walden and Mrs. M. Peddle. Mrs. Walden and Mrs. Peddle gave a report on the annual presbyterial in Kincardine. Mrs. McPherson and Mrs. Jardine had birthdays recently. Elizabeth Robinson read a poem and•'closed the program,with . W hymn 202. Mrsi rhtman'' ended the progra with praYerr , written by. Dan George; .... • Minuteswere.. read . and adopted _ and treasurer's report was given. A •collection. was taken and blessed. The April 1 meeting will be held at the home of. Mrs. A... ,emoine.... Mrs. Walden closed the trmeeting. ,with the Lord's Prayer in North American Indian paraphrase and the benediction. A social half hour followed. Unit 4 Unit 4 of the Lucknow United Church Women met in the fellowship room of the church on March 4 and had as their guests the Evening Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Church. The room was tastefully decorated for St. Patrick's Day, Mrs. Harold Greer, president of the . United Church Women, presided and •opened with a poem "The Miracle of Prayer" and gave a few words of welcome to our guests. Mrs. William Henderson presided for the program and read a little artick, on Advice. A hymn was sung followed by the devotions which was prepared by Maudie Fisher. Two pleasing solos were rendered by Mrs. Edward Brown, accompanied by Mrs, Bruce Raynard on the piano. Mrs. Noble Johnston introduced the guest speaker; Mrs. Alvin Mundell, who chose as her topic"The Season of Lent". She gave us much to think about. Another hymn was sung, followed by the offering which was received by Mrs. William Hunter.and Mrs. Susan Cboke and blessed by Mrs. Anne Anderson. Mrs. Jim Morrison gave two readings which were filled with good advice. A pleasing piano duet was played by Mrs. Bert Moffat and Mrs. Bruce, Baynard followed by a hymn. Mls. Ramsay closed this part Of the meeting, with prayer. 'Mrs. Alex Andrew expressed apprecia- tion for the program sn capably put. on. the . Presbyterian ladies.
