Different styles come and go, but the •
traditional bridal gown is still the popular
choice for today's bride. .
"The high neckline, Victorian sleeves
and cathederal train are features the ,
girls like to„ have,” says Pauline Hope,
owner of House of -Brides in Walkerton. •
However, with several styles available,
choosing the style of gown is not easy.
She says quite a few girls are going for
the modern, shorter gown, but the long
straight gown with a detachable train is
very popular as well.
Girls will more than likely go into a
bridal shop with a style already in mind
or they will choose one from a bride
magazine in the store.
If the style of dress is American or
European, Pauline will try to finda
Canadian -dress very similiar to it.
-It can take up to six months to order a.
dress. through the UnitedStates,.and with
the present exchange rate so high, she
says it is much wiser to go with a
similiar Canadian version.
Satinis the number one gown material
throughout all seasons -Ws year, with. the
second choice being taffeta, says Pauline.,
. If money is -no object in choosing a -
gown, there is no limit to what a bride -
can pay: At Pauline's shop the price can
go as high as $850. However, for the
moneyconscious, a gown can be purchas-
ed for $150. -
And then there are headpieces. Hats •
are number one, says Pauline, with .
spray, tiara and halo headpieces all very
popular.

The spray headpiece, basically like a
tiara, is made of nylon or satin flowers,
interspersed with beadmork, and a veil
to the back.
Most headpieces can have a blusher, a
double veil for the front and back, she
says.
As for extra• accessories the, girls may
be interested iii, the shop carries gloves,
crinolins and hoops.
Once the bride has chosen her, gown,
head piece and accessories, the nextstep
is to choose the bridesmaids' dresses.
"The cocktail length has become very
popular in the last little while," says
Pauline.'
•
The color of the dress should be chosen
according to the season of the wedding.
Soft colors like teal and aqua are
favorite summer colors, but pink is still.
the first choice for summer weddings..
Variations of pink 'Such as dusty rose .and
berry shades are often worn in the fall
along with darker colors like royal blue.
The price of bridesmaids' dresses can
range from $75 to $170. < •
Pauline suggests that a bride choose
her gown four months in advance of the
• wedding. • .
Thiswill leave eight weeks for delivery
of the gown and then, if necessary, two
maths, for any alterations. •
As forlhose girls interested in a
• homemade gown, Pauline says she is
• unaware of anyone in the immediate area
who makes bridal gowns.
• However, Pauline will make.floireigirl
dresses and headpieces *upon request. •
