The Entertainer expects success
By James Friel
With about an area population of
7,000 to draw on, video store operator
Bob Brindley feels there is enough of a
market to maintain another video movie
rental outlet in Lucknow.
"In Goderich, there are, four rental
stores for 7,500 people. And we have
only 180 degrees (from Lake Huron) to
draw from," he said.
Brindley and his wife Ruth have oper-
ated The Entertainer in Goderich since
March 1984, after previously operating
another type of business, and have
found only success $ince then.
The two opened their store there with
200 tapes and six machines, and selling
music tapes and satellite dishes as well.
Things have progressed from there.
"In Goderich, I figured we'd average
out at about 600 movies: we went to
1200. We have 24 machines now and
manufacture part of the dishes our-
selves." He estimated that between 750
to 1000 customers come through the
door. And since Christmas business is
up 25 - 30 per cent.
They've decided to drop the audio
tapes as they are more trouble than
they're worth, with fighting shoplifting
and the meteoric rise and fall in demand
for popular artists.
After opening the first Entertainer,
the rental outlet expanded into Bayfield
into the Pizza Palace on the mainstreet
as a sub -store.
"It's smaller, let's face it, but. with
the summer and the cottage industry
there, we hope we'll do all right," he
said.
"I had considered (expanding into)
Lucknow quite a while ago. Fortunately
for myself, I was able to buy a store that
was closing down so all the equipment
just came here."
There are 400 tapes at the Lucknow
BUSINESS
store and in the next few weeks he plans
to have 10 to 15 machines. The number
of tapes ultimately available depends on
demand. The store carries VHS only.
"Expansion also goes according to
how often tapes are released. There are
only a half dozen in March but February
, had about a dozen releases so that influ-
ences it," Brindley explained.
Marnie Button is the chief staff
member in Lucknow and Brindley plans
to hire two or three others part time to
fill in the operating hoilrs' schedule.
The store is open 12 to 7 from
Monday to Thursday and 12 to 9 on
Friday. Saturday's hours start at 9 and
continue to 6 and the store is open 1 to 5
on Sunday.
Some of the special weekly features
Brindley has introduced to the Lucknow
store from the original outlet are happy
hour on Saturday and an incentive to
bring movies in early on Sunday.
Happy hour on Saturday is between 5
and 6 and tapes are rented for half
price. The Sunday special consists of a
free movie for a night if patrons return
their rented movies between 1 and 2.
"We put through about 150people in
that hour in Goderich."
Last year, the owners of the Enter-
tainer in Goderich showed their apprec-
iation for a good year with their first
annual sleigh ride with hot cider and
donuts. Brindley estimated about 500
people took advantage of the special
day.
"It's called give and take and people
appreciate it. It's the same with the free
movie (the Sunday incentive)."
