Midgets take Ripley tourney
Interest in Lucknow Midgets hockey this
week centred on the Ripley Lions Tourna-
ment on Saturday. The team survived two
shoot-out wins against Ripley and Paisley
before wrapping up the championship with
a victory over Teeswater.
In game 1 at 8 a.m., the host team,
Ripley, were gracious hosts as they
grabbed a 5 - 1 lead early in the game and
then allowed Lucknow to inch back into
contention with four third period goals, two
in the last two minutes. At the bell, the
game was tied at 6 - 6 dictating a shoot-out.
Netminder Reavie came up with a big one
while all three Lucknow shooters scored to
give Lucknow a 9 - 8 shoot-out win/
In game 6 against Paisley, Lucknow took
an early lead but surrendered it for a short
time early in the second period. Lucknow
shooters re-established the lead but
couldn't hold it as Paisley kept finding a
way to catch up. Although Lucknow held a
slim edge most of the game, the score was
tied at one, two, three,' five and at the bell,
six. Again in a shoot-out, netminder Reavie
came up big allowing only one while
Lucknow shooters netted two for an 8 - 7
win.
In game 10 before a near full -house
crowd, Lucknow met Teeswater who ad-
vanced by defeating Thornton and Mild-
may. The first two periods were evenly

matched; Teeswater scored first, the 'only
goal of the first period but Lucknow tied
the game late in the second on a goal by
Chris Irwin from Murray Houghton and
Dan Gilchrist. Early in the third, Lucknow
grabbed a lead _h on a blast by Jeff Walden
from Scott Hackett and Houghton. Tees -
water stormed back with a goal in just 19
seconds but Jeff Walden broke the tie with
his second marker of the game from
Hackett and Andy Grazier. With 1:09 left
in the game, Dan Gilchrist completed a
play from Brad Priestap for a short-handed
goal. To Teeswater's credit, they kept
coming back and scored their third goal
with just three second left.
However, at the bell, Lucknow had a 4 - 3
lead and the championship for the first
time in eight years.

M.V.P. Netminder Brian Reavie deserves
honourable mention for maintaining a
sense of humour through two shoot-outs
and for posting a solid championship
game. The checking line of Steve De Jong,
Fred Flanagan and Jamie Humphrey
warmed their coach's heart; their aggres-
sive forechecking set the tempo of the
game. Congratulations coach, not bad for a
sophomore.
