rovancial canola association developed_ after Lucknow meeting
By James Friel
A provincial association for canola
growers has, been developed in South
Western Ontario, following a meeting in
Lucknow Jan. 16.
Through meetings in the last year, or-
ganizers recognized the need for 'an
association, particularly in the area of
sharing production methods, said Mur-
ray Thompson of RR- 1 Ripley.
"It had started in this area and
around Moorefield, just east of Listow-
el, they were interested as well," said
Thompson.
Another reason for developing an
organization . is to seek protection for
growers in the event an elevator goes
bankrupt, for example.
Canola is a coed weather crop finding
more popularity with area farmers in
recent years as a fall, and increasingly
often, as a spring ,crop. It was originally
grown primarily in Western Canada.
In the vegetable oils and margerines
consumed, canola oil now constitutes ..
close to 60 per cent of the oil used in
these products. Growers find canola
superior to flax, another leading vege-
table oil crop.
The meal from canola is added to live-
stock feed as , a protein supplement.
Ire the summer, the group received its
charter which was commissioned from a
lawyer in Goderich. The charter was a
necessary step in the toad to setting up.
the association,
However, because .of the season, the
farmers couldn't hold the meeting
designed to rough out the association's
snake up. Only after - -the advent of
winter could development proceed.
"We intend to try to get help from the
Ontario government to fund the associa-
tion. We need to show member inter-
est," said Thompson.
So far, the 55 members the groups
consists of come from Grey, Bruce,
Wellington, Dufferin and Huron Coun-
ties, and the regions of Waterloo and
Peel. Provisions havebee n made to
change the association to add directors,
as needed, Presently, there are six
