UCWs study native peoples
Unit 1
The leader of Unit 1, Grace Gibson,
welcomed all present to her home. The
eleven members answered the roll call with
payment of fees and a resolution for the
New Year. The majority voiced the inten-
tion to visit shut-ins more often.
Grace Gibson read a verse for the New
Year followed by the hymn "What a friend
we have in Jesus".
Committee reports were given by mem-
bers present and the offering taken.
The devotional part of the meeting was
chaired by Noma Campbell, reading a
Bible verse followedby prayer.
The hymn "Bless be the tie that binds"
was followed by the Scripture reading by
Mrs. Stuart Reavte.
Mrs. William Bolt read "A Handful of
New Days" followed by a suitable poem
"Something to live for".
"Breathe on me Breath of God" was
followed by the poem "My Purpose" by
Mrs. Eric Hackett.
The study book on the native indian
resulted in a very interesting discussion for
all present. Grace was sung and a social
time followed.
Unit 2
Unit 2 met at -the home of Mrs. Eldon
Bradley on Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. with 14
members and one visitors present.
Mrs. Vernon, Hunter presided for the
New Year's program; She opened with a
reading "Welcome for a New Year",
followed by the hymn "Standing at the
portal", with Mrs. Mary MacGillivray as
the pianist. Mrs. Hunter opened the
worship with prayer andthe scripture was
read by Mrs. Eldon Henderson. Miss
Helen Thompson gave an inspiring medita-
tion on "Behold 1 make all things new".
She also gave a reading, "Opportunities of
a New Year", and closed.. the worship with
prayer. All sang two verses of the hymn "0
Master, let me walk with Thee". Mrs. Alex
Hackett gave several New Year's readings.
Mrs. Vernon Hunter gave a reading
"Reality of Hope", followed by prayer.
Mrs. Bradley asked for help for the
Lucknow Agriculture Society banquet and
for the lunch at the annual meeting. Cards
were signed for Mrs. Spence Irwin, who is
a patient in University Hospital, Mrs. N. G.
MacKenzie who has moved to Princess
Court, Kincardine and to Mrs. Russ
Button, whose mother has recently died.
The roll call was answered by the
payment of our fees apd a suggestion for
the 1986 programs. The following officers
were chosen: leader, Mrs. Vernon Hunter;
secretary, Mrs. Eldon Bradley; treasurer,
Mrs. Alex Hackett; community friendship
and visiting, Mrs. Jim Mathers and Mrs.
Marie Greer; social functions, Mrs. Mary
MacGillivray; supply and welfare, Mrs.
Anna Dexter; stewardship, Miss Helen
Thompson; citizenship, Mrs. Mary Black;
flowers, Mrs. Eldon Bradley; and pianists,
Mrs. Peter Cook and Mrs, Mary MacGilliv-
ray.
The closing hymn was "Will your anchor
hold", followed by the benediction. Grace
was given by Mrs. Greer. The committee
served refreshments and a social time was
enjoyed.
Unit 3
The January meeting of Unit 3 of the
Lucknow United Church Women was held
at the Sepoy Apartments on Jan. 7.
Mrs. Jean Jardine capably convened the
devotional part of the meeting which
opened with a poem The Lamp of Hope
read by Mrs. Annie Kilpatrick. Scripture
passages were read Mrs. Sarah Ritchie
and Mrs. Jard°
The rollcall wa ` answered with a verse
on "hope" by ten members and four
visitors.
Mrs. Annie Shiells gave the meditation
reminding us that we each have a clean
sheet with which to start the New Year.
Mrs. Jardine closed the devotions with
prayer.
Mrs. Sarah .Ritchie presided for the
election of officers. The new leader, Mrs.
Lois Walden, presided for the business
when .. announcements were made and
plans made for projects in 1986.
Unit 4
Unit 4 of Lucknow United Church
Women met on Jan. 7 with an attendance
of 19. The rollcall was answered by the
paying of membership fees.
The theme for the meeting was The New
Year. Mrs. Cam Thompson chaired the
program and gave the call to worship,
"What we are is God's gift to us, What we
make of ourselves is our gift to Him".
The Scripture from Revelations was read
by Mrs. Harold Greer. Mrs. Velma Morn-
ingstar
gave the meditation and prayer.
The topic, "The New Year", was
presented by Mrs. Stuart Collyer, who told
how we should look back on our mistakes,
failures and disappointments of the past
year and strive to correct, them in the
coming year. Acting as responsible people
we can learn much from our' own experien-
ces, and have the satisfaction of a year
spent in useful living.
Mrs. Greer gave a New Year's reading
and Mrs. Collyer read a humorous reading
on New Year's resolutions.
Mrs. Greer gave the origin of the
well-known hymn, "Blest be the tie that
binds", which the group then sang and
Mrs. Thompson closed the program with a
prayer. Mrs. . Gordon Cayley was the
pianist.
Mrs. Clarence Ritchie presided for the
appointment of a unit leader. Mrs. Harold
Greer was appointed as the 1986-87 leader
and presided for the business. Other
officers appointed were, assistant leader,
Mrs. Cam Thompson; flowers, Mrs. A. J.
Wilson and Mrs. George Joynt; and
christian education, Mrs. Charlie Davies.
Clothing and other items for the bale are
asked to be in by Jan. 31. Mrs. Davies,
supply convener, asked for men's shirts for
hospital gowns and crimp material for
quilts.
Reports from the treasurer, Mrs, Ken
Cameron, and community friendship, Mrs. .
Cliff Crawford, were given.
Rollcall proves interesting
The January meeting of the Lucknow WI
was held in the town hall on .tan. 14. A
delicious dessert was served by the com-
mittee in charge, namely: Mary MacGil-
livray, Winnifred Gammie, Susan Mc-
Naughton and Thelma Brown.
In the absence of president Ruth
Bogues, Past President Grace Gibson
chaired the meeting for the business.
Jean Whitby gave the secretary's report
and the treasurer's report.
Nineteen members answered the rollcall

decided to quilt for the Participation
Lodge. Each member is . to bring the
sial for quilts to the February
meeting. Kathleen MaCtosh - showed
some of her candle wicking work which was
very lovely.
Mary MacGillivray, the Public Relations
convener, chaired the meeting for the
program. 0 Canada was . sung by all
followed with a reading by Mary. Susan
McNaughton gave the motto "Put your
talents into the WI and watch them grower;
Isobel Ritchie favored with some Scottish
piano music. Winifred Gammie gave a
reading.
The district president, Mrs. William
MacPherson brought greetings from the
district. Mary .MacGillivray thanked her
and presented het with! a .'.gift..
Thelma Brown gave a reading and Susan
McNaughton presented some Sc►ttish
stories. The meeting closed with the
Queen.
