Changes in. '8
were beneficial
The year 1985 has been an eventful one for Lucknow and
area.
In politics, two major changes have drastically altered
the faces of both the province and the village.
The area's MPP, Murray Elston, is a member of the
Liberal party that fared well enough in the provincial
election May 2 to wrest power from the Tories after a 42
year reign.
The popular young MPP was made minister of health
and has tackled oneof the toughest jobs in the cabinet with
a great amount of energy. Extra billing and government
overpayment to pharmacists will both be things of the
past.
Locally, the man who followed a family tradition and
became reeve, retired after 28 years of service to the
village.
George Joynt was always reeve to a number of
residents, but he stepped aside for five year councillor
Herb Clark to take over duties.
New Reeve Clark and the council of George Anderson,
John MacLeod, Ab Murray and Eldon Mann have started
the process again to install sewers in the village.
An addition was completed and paidfor, for the
Wingham and District Hospital. The emergency wing was
long needed and, after the decision was made to go ahead,.
thebuilding and fundraising were skillfully handled. And
in July this year the hospital had a surplus of $368,387
despite the new wing.
Farmers and other landowners started to fight Ontario "
Hydro plans to install another power line corridor through
the. area.
The Lions Club came up with a bold new initiative and -
began the fundraising on a $1 million sports complex. Over
$60,000 was Collected at the kick off party and more than
700 tickets of the 3,000 available have been sold.
Many of the changes during 1985 have already proven
beneficial. Hopefully, events, in 1986 will be even more
positive for the area.
