Volunteers work hard to enhance snowmobile trails
by Pat Livingston
"Let it snow, tet it snow, let it
snow!" That is the lament of snow-
mobilers as they patiently wait for
Mother Nature to pravideYthem.with
the necessary ingredient to enjoy
their sport..
One of those anxious, snow-
mobilers,is David Hanna, president
of the Bervie - Bluewatcr Town and
Country Club, who is looking for-
ward to a successful season. But a
successful season does not begin
with the first snowfall. It begins
with the hundreds of hours of
volunteer time that go into.
preparing trails prior to that first
snowfall.
Volunteers from arca snowmobile
clubs and landowners have joined
forces to develop a "great, circuit
for snowmobilers" on a main cor-
ridor from Lucknow to Ripley, past
the Bluewater Clubhouse, west to
Kincardine and east to Greenock
swamp trail and Teeswater-
Riversdale main trails, says. Hanna.
In addition, volunteer workers will
be completing the efforts of Win-
gham , and St. Helen's trails as a
connecting link.
• "Volunteers are the backbone of
our sport; without hundreds of
hours dedicated, these trails would
never be developed and main-
tained," says 'Hanna. •
The trails will be groomed 10 feet
wide, which is "big time news for
snowmobilers."
The Central Groomers group
(Bervie-Bluewater, Rivcrsdale,
Tecswater, Ncustadt, Hanover,
Mildmay and Formosa clubs) com-
bined resources this year and pur-
chased a new BR 160 Bomardier
and Mogul Master multi -blade drag.
The group applied for and received
a $35,000 grant from the Ontario
Federation of Snowmobile Clubs,
towards the $131,000 purchase"
price. "The balance of this money
is all generated from snowmobile
trail passes bought each year by
snowmobilers," said Hanna. "No
government dollars are involved.
This is why club wardens patrol
these trails to catch sledders who do
not buy trail passes. Support your
sport, or stay off the trails," says
Hanna.
Providing high quality trails for
snowmobilers also benefits arca
towns and •vilieges . "These
developed trails help bring tourism
dollars into our area," says Hanna.
"The only thing a snowmobiler
carries is: a wallet. They have to
buy food, gas, oil, parts and lodging
every place they go."
Hanna said with the widening of
all trails this year, help is always
needed. If you'd like to get in-
volved, contact any member of the
clubs listed above.
Now, "let it snow, let it snow, let
it snow!"
