Book has rural roots
Features organizations, leaders
by Debbie Davidson
The book's name says it all.
"A Record of Achievement, Bruce
County's. Leadership in Farm Or—
ganizations" was eight years in the
making and takes readers back to
the start of the century whcn farm
organizations were first in the
making.
Author Jim Powers, formerly of
Chepstow, now living in Point
Clark, said a lot of hard -copy infor-
mation has been lost over the years,
but many people hold lots of infor-
mation in their memories.
"It was a long, 'drawn out project.
1 had a hard time getting' infor-
mation because farmers are not
noted for saving their records.. And
some of the material people. have
saved surprised me."
A Bruce County Federation of
Agriculture press release describes
the book as a "history of farm
organizations and Bruce County
farm leaders."
The book includes many anec-
dotes and personal reminiscences
from Power's own involvement in
many 9f the organizations over the
past 50 years."
Powers said he was asked to write
the book because a lot of today's
faro . leaders are not aware of the
organization's history.
The Ontario Federation of
Agriculture (OFA) was formed in
1940 and by 1946 it started to
"railroad."
The initial launch of the
federation was held by western
Ontario farmers in London. Or-
ganizers asked James Garner,
Minister of Agriculture at the time,
to attend a two-hour meeting.
"About 1,500 farmers showed up
and it lasted for two days. After
that", the birth of the federation was
assured "
In those early years, the OFA
knew the direction it had to take,
said Powers.
The hard cover, 280 -page edition
made its debut at, the Bruce County'
federation's 53rd annual meeting
.and banquet, Nov. 5 at the Chesley
Community Centre.
The book, which features more
than 75 photographs, is available at
various locations in Lucknow,
Chepstow, Teeswater, Tara,
Walkerton, Port Elgin, Chesley,
Kincardine, Wiarton, Mildmay,
Ripley and Paisley.
The federation has. printed 1,580
copies of the book.
Consistent • pressure nets win for Novice A
The Lucknow Novice A team
travelled to Mildmay last week and
handed the opposition the losing
end of a 10 - 2 score. Luckndw
came out skating hard and never let
up over the entire game.
At 3:14 in the first period, Mark
Hackett opened the scoring with
assists from Bob Raymond and
Kyle Dorscht. Soon 'after, James
Mann had an .opportunity with a

breakaway. At 5;13 Jesse Johnston
fired one in from the slot on a pass
from Derck Quinlan. Within the
next minute Brad Gilchrist i was
streaking on a breakaway. This play
was followed by Hackett and Tyler
Hamilton setting up Raymond for
Lucknow's third goal. Mildmay
came back with one near the end of
the first.
Continued pressure on Mildmay
in the second resulted in goals by
Hamilton (2) and Raymond, and
assists by Hackett (2), Josh Ackert
and Hamilton.
Mildmay came back a little
stronger early in the third, but in
the last eight minutes of the game
Lucknow scored four more times.
Points went to Raymond, Nigel
Black, Hackett, Mann, Daniel Dren-
nan an Luke Drennan.
