for its
efforts
The LCPS World Watchers
Nature Club was recognized for its
conservation efforts last week when
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority (MVCA) named this
year's recipients of conservation
award certificates.
The World Watchers Nature Club
was formed in 1989 with the goal
of caring for the environment. The
group, encouraged by teacher Joan
Black, has been involved in
numerous conservation and resource
management projects. Among its
many projects the group built bird
and bat boxes for their community,
assisted with tree planting as part pf
the Lucknow Greenway project,
undertook a beach cleanup on Lake
Huron and made donations to local
wildlife rehabilitation centres.
Others receiving the certificates
were: the Maitland Trail As-
sociation; Tony and July Emond of
Elma.Township; Glen Warwick of
Bluevale; Don Eadie of Tumberry
Township "and Martin Fronk of
Minto Township. .
"The goal of the MVCA is to
conserve watershed soil and water.
resources," noted MVCA vice -chair
Ivan Suggitt. "We could never
accomplish this goal without the
cooperation, assistance and support
of individuals and groups such as
these." .
OPP charge man with
driving related offenses
• A 34 -year-old Lucknow • area
mad with two children in his car
was charged with drinking and
driving related offenses on Nov.
-• 1.2
At 12:30 a,m., officers on
patrol in Lucknow observed the
man driving erratically on
Campbell Street.
He was arrested and charged
with impaired driving, driving
while prohibited, driving without
insurance and driving with an
. unauthorized' licence plate.
The children were taken to
their mother's home about two
miles away.
Kincardine OPP are investigat-
ing a possible tampering with a
piece of construction equipment
at Bruce Generating Station B at
the Bruce Nuclear Power Devel-
opment.
OPP were called by BNPD
security on Nov. 15 to report a
bolt had allegedly been loosened
bn a beam trolley being used in
the construction of a monorail. ,
A construction worker dis-
covered the loose bolt on Nov.
14 and reported it to security.
If the bolt came out, the trolley
could have fallen, endangering
people working below.
The equipment had been
repaired before the OPP were
notified.
The incident is under investi-
gation.
Jos Montferrand, a man
known by many names

him around his shoulders, knocking
down .the other assailants as they
charged. Jos managed to throw a
number of the„ gang off the bridge,
and the rest retreated' back the way
they came. -
Jos also gained fame for his
victories in various officially staged
competitions, such as the one on the
Quebec City waterfront, in which
he defeated the boxing champion of
the Royal Navy. The bare knuckled
match went 17 rounds, and was
watched by thousands of cheering
spectators.
Jos Montferrand, the 19th century
Canadien lumberjack, became a
folk hero in his own time, and after
his death the oral tradition carried
tales of his exploits across Canada
and over the border to the lumber
camps of New England, Michigan
and Wisconsin. By 1900, he was a
legend. Even his name had
undergone a transformation, to Big
Joe Muffcron, Joe Maufree, or.
sometimes, Joe Murphey.

parties and will come into effect in
the next year.
The : existing laws were made
years ago and are out of date. For
example, the existing law does not
' permit a person to appoint, in ad-
vance, someone to make personal
care decisions for, them if they
become mentally incapable. The
new law allows this. The new law
confirms that a person's wishes wilt
be respected if they become in-
capable of expressing them. The
existing law gives few options to
family members_ if they need to get
legal authority to make. decisions.
The new law provides more
choices. The new law protects the
rights of those who are mentally
-incapable.
The new Office of the Public
Guardian & Trustee will apply for
guardianship only as a'last resort,
when it is clear that a person needs
it and there is no one else willing
