Hamilton family honored
to accept the Chamber's
community service award
To the editor:
I'd like to take this opportunity to
thank Irene Dickie, president of the
Lucknow & District Chamber of
Commerce, and the members of the
Chamber of Commerce for awar-
ding my father, Al Hamilton, with
the Chamber's 1994 Community
Service Award.
I had full intention of delivering
this message in person at the annual
banquet on Nov. 19, but found
myself somewhat overwhelmed by
the emotion of the moment.
My Dad believed, very strongly,
in the value of home and family
and devoted himself to making life
better for both. To understand how
and why he accomplished as much
as he did, you would first need to
know how he defined both home
and family. • His 'family' often
included someone who needed his
help, a warm meal, a place to sleep,
a shoulder to lean on or a friendly
ear and his 'home'. extended far
beyond the walls of any building he
ever owned. He saw his community
.as his home and the home of his
family ,for years to come. He
wanted it .to be the best for them...
I remember, as a child, being
taught that, the words "I don't care"
a were the ultimate profanity because
they signalled an unwillingness to
make things better. He believed and
taught us to believe that the only
TTEmT0R
way anything in our lives , gets
better is if we get out there and
help to make it better.
In Irene's nomination, she
wondered if Al's family would feel
honored to accept this award on his
behalf and to know the community
still recognizes his accomplish-
ments.
Please know that we are 'more
than honored. We sincerely thank
you for this recognition and we
know that such a .gesture made by
his peers would have made Dad
very proud.
>`le spent his life quietly going
about his 'community helping to
make things better and I strongly
suspect he's trying the same thing
in his new home. Since that locale
should be pretty close to perfection;
maybe he's getting a rest.
Sincerely, Patricia Lee and family,
London; for GI'adys Hamilton, ,
Lucknow;. Ken Hamilton • and
family, Blenheim; Barb Van
Diepenbeek and family, Ashfield;
Steve Hamilton and family, Edmon-
ton, and Joan Chamney and.family,

Parent asks others to
stress safety to kids
To the editor: '
I am a concerned parent asking
other parents with children who
have ATCs or motor bikes to stress
safety to those children.
A lot of us have no plates or
insurance as our children just use
them for fun, out in the open field
or on the train tracks.
But please, stress to them that the
two minutes or soit takes to get off
the machine and walk it across the
road, could be the short time that
saves their life of someone else's.
My son had a very close call just
a few weeks ago. Tho other person
- involved in this accident has been
very patient and I 'hope everything
will soon be back in order for all of
us.
If anyone has ideas about how we
.can get activities going or a club
started for the young people in this
community, give me a call. 1 'don't
want to sec anyone else get hurt
trying to find a place to have some
fun:°

Radio station recognizes
over -looked workers
To the editor:'
CKNX Radio. would like to recog-
nize a group of hard-working
people who are often over -looked at
municipal election time. .
That group is made up of all the
local municipal clerks, clerk -ad-
ministrators, and their staffs who
are involved in all of the mechanics
of the municipal election. This
covers the many duties from the
initial "Calling"; through the coun-
ting of the ballots and the clean-up
after the fact.
The CKNX Radio news
department would like to extend its
(hanks to all of these individuals for
their co-operation. Without their
assistance, CKNX AM 920 and FM
102 would have been unable to
provide the hourly and half-hourly
updates that ran through the
evening of Nov. 14, and the 30 -
minute summary of results that.
aired the following morning at 9
a.m. In total, CKNX Radio news
provided • •results from 104
municipalities, including ' eight
school boards. The fact that these
results are important to the people
of midwestern Ontario was em-
phasized, when• the CKNX Radio
newsroom handled hundreds of
callers, on Tuesday and Wednesday,
through our municipal election
hotline. This response demonstrated
that people really do care , about
their local elections.
Finally, as a point of clarification,
we would like to remind the readers
of this paper, and the listeners of
CKNX Radio, that CKNX Radio
and CKNX Television are two
entirely . separate companies. The
mandate for CKNX Radio continues
to be the counties of Huron, Perth,
Grey, Bruce and North WeI-.
lington...an area CKNX Radio is
proud to serve!
Ray Baynton,
News Director
CKNX radio.
MPP sets powers of
-- attorney f -acts --straight
To the editor:
Many constituents have called me
recently about powers of attorney.
They have been alarmed at stories
that if they do not assign a power
of attorney right away that if
something happens to them then the
government will take their assets.
This is incorrect.
The Substitute Decisions Act is a
new law that allows you to choose
someone in advance to make
decisions for you when you are no
longer mentally capable. The new
law covers two areas of decision-
making: decisions about property
and finances, and decisions about
personal care (things such as
housing, health care and nutrition).
The law Ivas supported by all three
