Hamilton family acceptsposthurnous award
by Pat Livingston
Around 244 business people at-
tended the annual banquet and
dance hosted by the Lucknow and
District Chamber of Commerce last
Saturday evening.
The highlight of the evening was
the presentation of the Chamber's
Community Service Award. Two
nominations were received this
year.
Nominee Frank Alton, of Ashfield
Township, has devoted 40 years of
his lifetime to the community,
ranging from involvement with.
Junior farmers, the Lucknow
Agricultural Society, and his Sun-
day School. Mr. Alton is a Big
Brother, and he and his wife
Lorecn, have been very active in
the Hemophilia Association.
Mr. Alton's nominator profiled
him by saying, "He has always
been a.good neighbor, always ready
and willing to help in the com-
munity. In spite of health problems
in his own family, Frank has al-
ways presented an optimistic -at-
titude and given freely of his
time...always willing to try to find
a solution for difficult situations,
not finding fault with individuals '
who' might differ in opinion with
him. Frank is a kind and compas-
sionate person who has made his
community and church a better
place to live."
This year's award was pos-
thumously bestowed on Al Hamil-
ton, who died on Nov. 9, 1993. Mr:
Hamilton's community spirit was
evident from the time he was a
young man. He gave freely of his
time and energy to many local
organizations, including the _Luck -
now and District Lions Club of
which he was a charter. member;
Teen Town; Obstention lub, and
'others and for 18 years he was very
involved in minor hockey, inter-.
mediate hockey and minor baseball.
If there was a project that would
better the community, Mr. Hamilton
was involved in it, to name a few -
arena renovations, the swimming
pool, the community centre, the
sports complex and Jamboree '83.
Along with his wife, Gladys, he
hosted several international youth
exchange students and was a foster
parent. He was a volunteer lire
fighter for 11 years; and in 1988
was named a 'Heart of Gold'
recipient.
Some of Mr. Hamilton's family
were able to attend the banquet to
receive the award.
On the lighter, side of things,
'Country Clem' (Don Vair of
Belgrave) paid a visit to the ban-
quet to renew 'relationships' with
his 'sister' Isabel MacPherson and
'brother' Rick Hodgins. 'Country.
Clem's extensive repertoire of "all
in fun" jokes included many local
business people. If he wasn't com-
menting on your lack of hair, use of
polygrip to hide your aging, or
cautious spending, Country Clem
