Parents till trying to save
gifted students program
Parents who want the Bruce
County Board of Education to save
its program for gifted students arc
still working toward that goal.
In June, parents of students' in the
TRAIL independent learning pro-
gram made a presentation, asking
the board to restore the program to
four full-time teachers and make
sure it continues to serve the special
needs of gifted elementary students.
A progress report tabled in
November indicates that the pro-
gram has been "restructured," with
the two remaining teachers working
at seven -tenths rather than full-time.
with students. But Superintendent
Sharon Ribey said there are "excit-
ing" indications thatparents;
especially in the Kincardine area;
are willing to help out with the
program.
One initiative they have under-
taken is to survey the .community to
find retired professionals, seniors or
other resource people willing to
share their experience with students
and add'enrichment to the program.
Director of Education Paul
Martindale praised the efforts of the
parents' advisory committee to the
gifted program, and said the project
will give the board a chance to try
to .expand • the gifted program
beyond the intermediate 'grades it
now serve's. •
He also predicted there will be
more advisory committees for other
programs as the board tries to keep
up "quality programs with fewer
resources."

Department had two calls over the
weekend.
On Friday evening, firefighters
were alerted over their pagers.

in the phone booth at the corner of
the old post office building. Chief
Peter Steer says firefighter Dean
Lindsay and Ken Irwin extinguished
the blaze.
