Province comes through with $684,000 by Pat Livingston It was a group of people with • soaring' spirits and happy faces that greeted Paul 'Klopp, Huron 'MPP, when he made the official announ- cement last Thursday that the province would be investing $684,000 in the phase two.construc- tion of the Lucknow sports complex. The funding is through jobsOrtutrio Community Action. "I am delighted that the Ontario government is able to support this project," said Klopp. "It shows that communities. in Bruce and Huron counties can work together on a project that.benefits everyone. This project will create jobs. It will also pla.y'a pivotal role in the economic renewal or the area. 'Its improved facilities will enhance the area's potential to' host events 'year-round and attract more visitors." "It's good to have jobsOntario as a partner,", said Barry Johnston,. chair of the phase two committee. "It's a great day for, Lucknow, to know„ that this project will go ahead. We needed that money." A great deal of time and effort by the committee was put into the application for funding. Since set up in. May, the committee has been meeting about three times a week. Klopp complimented the committee, saying that the application was one of the best ever submitted to obtain funds. Along with the $640,000 commit- ment ' from the four sharing municipalities (Lucknow, Ashfield, Kinloss and West Wawanosh) and various service clubs, Johnston said they now have $1.324 million ear- marked for the project. It's full speed ahead, now that funding is in place. Johrrston said tenders will be put by Nov. 16 to be submitted by Dec. 1. Half of the jobsOntario funding must be spent by Mar. 31, 1995. In effect, being spent could mean having that dollar. value of materials on site, not necessarily erected. 'Multiplex Engineering Ltd. of Port Elgin has been hired as the facilitator of the project. The committee at one point was looking at running the new ice. surface in a north -south direction, Johnston said after drilling test holes it was determined that was not feasible, due to what was found underground. At that time, the squash court, would have had to be moved as well. The arena ice surface will now be built 'to the west of the existing. newer section, said Johnston. The conduit running in that area is not a concern because it will be under neath the warm room. The new building will be three feet inside the agricultural society gates, necessitating .the closing of that lancway. By building to the west, Johnston said. there is a savings of $120,000 by not having to move the squash court. Incorporated in the construction will be a multi-purpose room, first aid and comfort room, and a tourism centre. Johnston said that various contin- gencies have been built into the plan that could be removed, depen- ding on how high the tender prices come in at. Completion date for the project is Sept. 1, 1995, Other partners in the project, in addition to the provincial and municipal governments are the local Legion, Lions, Lucknow Craft Festival and the Kinsmen. Three more Huron landfill sites ;eliminated- for now by Keith Roulston Huron ' County council con- firmed at the Nov. 3 meeting that three potential landfill sites in Colborne Township have been dropped from the list of can- didates but landowners can't completely. relax. Craig Metzger, project co- ordinator for the. Waste Management Master Plan Study confirmed under questioning of councillors that if none of the current sites (the 11 original candidates have been reduced to four) is . found acceptable, constraints will be relaxed' al- lowing class one and • two farmland to be included. Since the three ' sites were all eliminated because they had taw much class one land two farmland,'they would then come back into the picture.
