Fur trade on the west coast
by Lionel Kearns
On the 29th of March, 1778, the
,inhabitants of the Yuquot village on
the west coast of*what is now Van-
couver Island saw two strange
objects on the water. Oral tradition
has' it that the people at first took
the things to be floating islands,
with trees sticking up on them, and
small clouds caught in the trees.
Closer inspection proved that they
were actually very Targe canoes,
manned by hairy faced humans,
who wore outlandish costumes and
blew smoke from their lips.
The Mooachahts were witnessing
the arrival of two British sailing
ships, the Resolution and the Dis-
covery, under the command of
Captain James Cook, who was
mapping the uncharted coast line of
America, and looking for the
rumored "North West Passage"
from the Pacific, through or around
the contincnt, to the Atlantic.
The appearance of the ships
caused great excitement on shore,
and before long they were sur-
rounded by more than 30 large dug-
out canoes full of curious on-
lookers, who chanted songs and
beat* their paddles in unison on the

'i'0 THE EDITOR
To the editor:
On behalf of the Arthritis Society
I 'wish to thank the communities of
Lucknow and Dungannon for 'their
support given . in the amount of
$4,363 which also wouldn't have
been possible without the work of
the committed volunteers.
Volunteers are not paid -not
because they are worthless -but
priceless.

sides of their vessels. In the leading
canoe a figure in a brightly colored
costume danced on a platform at
the bow, conducting the song,
shaking rattles, blowing a whistle,
and covering and uncovering his
face with a carved and painted
mask.
Not to be outdone, the British
sailors sang their hosts.a sea shanty,
and struck up a tune on their fifes
and drums. After some initial
hesitation, the canoes drew close
enough for Cook, to offer his gold
braided captain's hat to the prin-
cipal chief, for which he received a
sea -otter cloak in exchange.
This was the beginning of an
intense, month-long encounter bet-
ween the 193 seamen and the 5000
inhabitants of Friendly Cove in
Nootka Sound. It was the first
extended contact between
Europeans and the people of the
Pacific North West Coast.
With no common language, and
no precedents to shape their expec-
tations, ,the two groups had same
difficulty communicating, yet they
found ways to trade. The natives
seemed willing to part with most of
their possessions, in exchange for
metal, which they knew the use of
and valued very highly. The
Englishmen were glad to get exotic
„trinkets to take home as souvenirs,
oil for cooking, fresh fish and food
and furs to use against the ..damp
and chilling weather. Although the
• men did not realize it at the time,
this was the beginning ' of the
lucrative maritime fur trade that
was to dominate life on the Pacific.
Coast for the next 75 years.
One point of contention arose
when Mooachahts tried to assert
ownership of the wood and water
the English were taking. This did
not make any sense to Cook,.
however, who, unknown to the
Mooachahts, had taken 'possession
of the land and its resources in the
,name of the British Crown. Two
hundred years later this same issue
is not much -closer to resolution.
