Veterinary
•
technicians
say they are
the forgotten
profession
Ontario's 1200 veterinary
technicians arc celebrating the first
international Veterinary Technicians
Week with presentations and tours
to introduce the public to the work
of the "forgotten profession."
Monica Tighe, past president of
the 25 -year-old Ontario Association
Veterinary Technicians (OAVT),
says technicians work with
veterinarians as professional
members of the veterinary. medical
team. -"People may 'think of us as
the "helper" at the vet"s office;
without realizing we arc part of the .
professional surgery and care
team," Tighe said.
Technicians who work in a
clinical setting may perform
laboratory procedures, adrriinistcr
anaesthesia and. • provide nursing
care for animals. Many will 'hold
clinic tours • this week as part of
public -education efforts to make the
profession, better known. • Events
are also being held throughout the
U.S. and in Saskatchewan.
Tighe .said some 'association.
members are employed by
veterinary clinics, research facilities,
and government, and in medical
laboratories, breeding..
establishments,. zoological.parks or
humane societies. Others. find their
niche • in teaching, the
pharmaceutical fields or in livestock
• health management and rural
practices involving. farm animals.
Agriculture, Food and • Rural
Affairs Minister •Elmer Buchanan
•
says technicians form an integral'
part of , the • farm animal care
network. "Veterinary technicians.
provide 'dedicated service in an
important. facet. of ' veterinary
medicine," he said.
Technicians receive fror,. tau to
three years of spccialixed training at
Ridgetown College of Agricultural
Technology : and other community
colleges. Training includes care
and handling of animals,•as well as
radiography, laboratory and clinical
procedures. Tighe, says technicians
continually upgrade their skills
through conferences offered by the
OAVT. "Our. focus as a
professional association is on'
continuing education.' she said.
Saskatchewan' and- Ontario arc
celebrating the first Veterinary
Technicians Week unofficially this . -
year, and hope to make the event
an official part of their provincial
calendars next fall.
