Port Albert Lumberjacks
The last, three meetings of the
Port Albert Lumberjacks have been
a joining of knowledge, experience
and hands-on. In the second
meeting everyone .practiced
measuring to familiarize themselves
with the imperial system compared
to the metric system. The 'leader
showed everyone how to properly
transfer a pattern and taught
everyone about "kerf."
We had a great time at John
MacDonald's in Port Albert for our
third meeting. An accomplished
carpenter who has built his own
house and workshop, Mr. Mac-
Donald showed us the uses of dif-
ferent tools, everything from hand-
saws and squares, to planes and
other electrical equipment, and how
to pse them safely. '
He also instructed us on different
types of hardwoods and softwoods
•and which ones were best for cer-
tain projects. Did you know that
you can identify wood by its grain,
smell and taste? Thanks to Mr.
MacDonald and his answers to all
of our questions.
For the fourth meeting at Peter
Adams' home, vile obtained some
valuable hands-on experience with
squares, hand -saws, coping saws,/
hammers, and drills. After
explanations and ,some.
demonstrations from our leaders
and youth leaders, we were let
loose to practice all of what we had
learned on some scraps of wood.
So now the Lumberjacks are
ready to saw and nail our projects
to the finish.
