by George Walker
My wife and I brought someone
home with us from our summer
vacation. She'sshort and cute.
She's loud and gets into trouble. By
- the way, this new friend of ourS is
orange. Her name is Penny and
she's a cat.
We first saw Penny when she and
her mother were out for a stroll.
They were two of the many cats
who lived in a nearby barn. I figure
Penny could tell we were tourists.
She rolled around in the grass and
put on a great show. Her mother
climaxed this exhibition by giving
Penny a big kiss.
A little later, we saw her again.
Penny came running through the
barnyard as Diane and I walked
down the gravel road. This was
• almost the feline equivalent of
Lassie. The actions of this small
orange bundle of fur captivated our
hearts.
I could easily be persuaded", I
told my wife, to make that kitten
our first pct. It really didn't take
any more persuading, for Penny had
done her job well. The next day,
Diane and myself went to the
farmhouse to ask if we might have
a kitten. They said sure, and we
. headed out ,to the barn to look for
Penny.
Bam cats are nimble creatures. I
caught one orange kitten. The color
was right, but the animal didn't
have the expressive little face I
•remembered. Then, I saw Penny
and her mother resting in the hay. I
grabbed her by the scruff ''of the
neck and we wrapped her in a
towel. Once inside our vacation
home, Penny took off ;like a shot.
She hid under the couch all after-
noon. Diane and I prepared to wait
it out. But, we had the ultimate

To the editor:
Diabetes is serious. Diabetes is a

serious complications.
Diabetes doubles the chance of
heart attack and stroke, is a leading
cause of adult blindness, is a
leading cause of amputations,

two, two little eyes looked at us
from under the couch.
Penny came out and began to eat.
She eventually allowed me to pick
her up. 1 held tiny Penny in my
hands. I told her humans were okay
and she should give us a break.
Besides, we could teach her stuff.
Penny learned quickly, and
warmed up td us during the
remaining week of vacation. During
the wee hours, we were .awakened
by our purring friend, who gave our
faces a good washing with her little
tongue.
When we got home, Penny settled
in easily. Our house is her domain.
I'm getting used to seeing our floor
covered with bottle caps, little bits
of wool and other things. Penny is
our "welcoming committee" at the
end ot,a long day. No lace is more
welcome at the door when we come
home.

The sadness of this event took the ,
shine off rowing as a popular spec-
tator sport, and the Paris Crew ..
. never again competed in inter-
national competition. However,
their victory in Paris, and their few
years,in the public spotlight, put the
young country of Canada on the,
map, and gave its citizens -a sense
of pride and new found unity. As
the .Tororito Globe pointed out at
the time, the Paris Crew's
achievement brought home "to the'
broad mass of our people that our
bold Maritime friends are nowour
fellow -countrymen in name' and in
fact."
