• Many kinds of work-bec'arc
part of our community and they
accomplish a great deal of work f.
in a short period of time.
Last week members' of the
fund-raising committee, at the
Lucknow and District Christian
School, got together in a pie -
making bee, Their challenge was
to make 280 uncooked apple,
raspberry, blueberry and cherry
pies.
Proceeds from the sale of the
pies, ordered by people within
the community, go to the school
to help offset costs.
The group has been doing this
for about . eight years. Other
fund-raising efforts include the
• talent and tangible auction sale,
a family fun night, catalogue and
cheese sales. The group's biggest
challenge was in 1993 when it
had a meal tent at the IPM held
in Walkerton. On a regular basis,
the Ladies Auxiliary to the
school caters at banquets.

three of 14 ladies who during a pie -making bee prepared 280
delicious pies for those who had ordered during their annual
fund-ralsing effort, for the Lucknow and District Christian
School. Mrs. Van der Velde got caught in the act of "test -
tasting." (Pat Livingston photo)
Shared landfill compared

municipalities that 'are running out
of landfill space. That opinion is
favored over the estimated $10
million • cost of finding a new
landfill site to serve county needs,
but is still getting opposition in
some quarters.
"It's like David and Goliath," said
Bruce township reeve Ron
Andrews. "Five of us are trying to
preserve our landfills with 20
against us. Our chances are about
nil."
Andrews wanted to know the
county's position • on the
all-important issue of compensation.
"Will the' compensation be in real
dollars?" Andrews asked, alleging
that what the credit host
municipalities will get "wouldn't
buy you a glass•of water".
Reavie replied that a series of
public meetings is intended to get
input on exactly that kind of ques-
tion. Reavie said the meetings will
gather information, hear opinions '
and let municipalities have a chance
to say what they'd want if they
were host to a shared landfill.
"Nobody is making any hard and
fast decisions for a long way down
the road," Reavie said.
The public meetings on shared
landfill sited will be held October
25 in Teeswatcr, October 26 in
Wiarton and October 27 in Paisley.
All meetings are at the Town Halls
and start at 7.30 p.m. On the agen-
da are issues including who will run
the shared landfill sites, how to
judge which sites are suitable for
sharing and what compensation the
host municipality will get.

ding out is that yes, we know that,
we're taking that into account (in
the welfare subsidy)," Verrips said.
Verrips said that of the welfare
recipients designated as having
received over -payment, 90% are
making regular repayments. He also
noted that after six months, the cost
of . having a staff person inves-
tigating overpayments and fraud is
"paying for itself".
