Seniors say yes to active living
When George Burns said. "You
can't help getting older, but you
don't have to get old", he may have
been talking about `Active Living"!
In Ontario, if you are 65 or older,
congratulations! You are part of a
group that knows the pleasures of
making physical activity a part of
everyday life. According to Myra
Kreick, Physical Activity Promoter
with the Bruce -Grey -Owen Sound
Health Unit, the senior population
has shown one of the greatest
increases in the number of people
taking part in physical activity three
times a week or more.
Active living doesn't have to
mean running a marathon or hitting
the weight room. No matter how
old you are, staying active will
improve your circulation and lower
your risk of heart disease, help you
relax and sleep, control your weight
and give you energy. It also makes
you more independent and more
sociable. According to Participac-.
tion Canada, active living can give
you fitness gains equal to taking 10
to 15 years off your age!
We can all enjoy simple activities
that work on three important com-
ponents of fitness. Improve your
strength by carrying groceries,
pushing a baby carriage or mowing
the lawn. Improve your flexibility
by gardening, sailing or golfing.
Increase your stamina through brisk
walking, swimming and dancing.
Contrary to popular belief, most
health .problems can benefit from
physical activity . However, if you
have concerns about your health,
discuss increasing your activity
level with .your doctor.
Just remember, active living can
make an incredible difference to,
your life. In the words of Oliver
Wendell Holmes, "People do not
quit playing because they grow old.
They grow old because they quit
playing." You're never too old to
get fit. Your body was built to
move. It depends on it! Say "yes"
to physical activity and get moving
-- a little more, a little more often.
AIDS awareness is a necessity
Ever since the first case of AIDS
was diagnosed over 10 years ago,
health officials have been warning
df dire consequences if the
epidemic is not checked. In some
parts of the world, these forecasts
have come true. In Grey and Bruce
counties we have remained
relatively unscathed. Or have we?
According to Ruth Campbell, one
of the two AIDS educators working
at the Bruce -Grey -Owen Sound
Health Unit, HIV infection and
AIDS is a reality in Grey and Bruce
counties. "Little has changed• over
the last 10 years," says Campbell.

The Horne of the Week!
"There is no cure for AIDS on the
horizon. The only way to stop the
spread is by eliminating risky
behavior."
• Statistics
point to a growing number of
Canadian teenagers infected with
HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Most new cases of AIDS are in the
20 - 29 age group. "Because it may
take up to 10 years for AIDS to
develop," explains Campbell, "most
of these people recently diagnosed
with AIDS were infected as
teenagers."

between AIDS and many so-called
coming-of=age rituals," says
Campbell. "These risky behaviors
include sexual activity and drug
use." In a rush to gain indepen-
dence, youth are unknowingly
placing themselves at risk for ex-
posure to HIV infections.
"Our young people need to feel like
they can ask questions of their
friends, teachers and parents and
not be judged," says Campbell.
One of the responsible choices
teenagers and adults are making in
increasing • numbers is seeking out
HIV testing. You should consider
beingtested if you. received blood
transfusions or blood products bet-
ween 1978 and 1985, have shared
needles for injection drug use,or
have had unprotected sex. Testing is
available through your family doc-
tor, the Health Unit or , at
anonymous testing centres in Bar-
rie, London and Toronto. All testing,
is done confidentially. Call your
Ideal Health Unit for more infor-
mation. •
