Fields of bright tulips in bloom
will welcome this year's visitors to
the fourth annual Winter Garden
Show at The Royal.
A total of 30,000 blossoms will
help celebrate Canadian -Dutch
connections in the 12 -day course of
the show, as well as the 400th
anniversary of the tulip's arrival in
Holland.
In tune with the Dutch theme,
visitors will. also see a 100 -foot
replica Dutch gracht, or canal, an
Amsterdam streetscape of house
facades with pocket gardens, a
market square and street vendors
selling cut flowers from carts.
A working greenhouse will
display Holland -Marsh -style hor-
ticulture in Canada, with a la Carte
Kitchen's Garden Bistro this year
specializing in Dutch treats,
including Indonesian fare. A
memorial square complete with a
cenotaph will honor Canadians who
died liberating the Netherlands 50
years ago.
New this year, experts from
Hamilton's Royal Botanical Gar-•
dens have developed a hands-on
educational program for children.
The Winter Garden Show's new
Information Centre will provide
information in print as well as on
screen. In addition, interested adults
can take short guided tours of the
show several times daily, conducted
by Winter Garden Show committee
members.
On Nov. 7, the night before the
show's opening to the public, a gala
Preview Evening will mark the first
official opening event of the 66th
Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
Special guests for the evening
include retiring Canadian sports
champion 'Big Ben' and rider Ian
Millar. Gala tickets at $100 apiece,
will this year raise funds benefiting
CanTRA, the Canadian Therapeutic
Riding Association. The door prize
winner receives a deluxe cruise for
two in the Mediterranean, complete
with air fare and cruise wardrobe.
The Winter Garden Show at The
Royal is open Nov. 8 to 19, from 8
a.m. to 10 p.m., except Sunday,

Copyright fee dents budget
It's going to cost the Bruce -Grey
separate board as much as $10,080
this year to photocopy material
protected by. copyright.
The licensing fee is part of a
province -wide deal that will affect
all boards of education at different
costs depending on enrolment. The
intent of the licensing fee is to give
writers and publishers some pay-
ment for their work, while still
making it accessible at a reasonable
cost to the education system.
Under what is called the
CANCOPY license, boards are
allowed 32 pages of photocopied
copyrighted material per student per
year. The catch is that the provin-

have to be paid this year, and that
in future the cost will have to come
