Bruce -Grey Separate School Board
New director of education says
changes are an important issue
Trustees for the Bruce -Grey
JSeparate School Board made Rose-
mary Kennedy's appointment as
Director of Education, effective
)October 1, official .at their Septem-
ber 27 meeting.
Kennedy has been acting director
for the past six months, and said in
"that time she has "established com-
munication" with staff and 'trustees
in the system.
The new director said the most
important issues facing the board in
the coming year are the continuing
changes that face education. Kenne-
dy named the on-going Royal Com-
mission on learning and a possible
provincial election in the spring as
two major events that could influ-
ence'education policy and planning.
The biggest challenge facing the
board is to determine how those
changes will affect the needs of
students in the classroom, she said.
"The most important thing is to
always keep in mind what the needs
of the young people and the chil-
dren are," Kennedy said in an inter-
view. "I certainly believe that as the
Director that has to be the focus of
the board. We have to always focus
on what do our children in the
counties of Bruce and Grey need.
How can we provide for them the
• best possible education amidst all of
this change?"
Kennedy has been with the board
since 1989 and has served as both

superintendent and acting director,
She told trustees she is looking
forward to her new duties.
"We have so much here to be
proud of. What we have to do is
continue that pride and share the
light," Kennedy said. •
After a closed session, trustees
decided to recruit a new superinten-
• dent to fill the vacancy that Kenne-
dy will leave. Until two years ago,
the board had three academic super-'
intendents along with its business
superintendent and director of edu-
cation. The number went down with
the retirement of Joe Rys, of
Walkerton, then again with the
naming of Kennedy as acting direc-
tor in March.
"We've been limping along for
quite a while," said board chair Bill
Zettel of the decision to fill a com-
plement of two academic superin-
. tendents and the director.

dicting enrolment for the Bruce -
Grey separate board are patting

• well done.
At the elementary level, predic-
.ions 'were 'just one student off at
3052, while initial reports from the
secondary level show 14 more
students than expected for a total of
1114. The figures are for "full-time
equivalent" students rather than the
actual number of pupils in the
classroom.
Sacred Heart High School is the
largest secondary school with 773
students, while St. Basil's in Owen
Sound remains the largest elementa-
ry school with 730 students in the
French , Immersion and regular
programs.
St. Anthony's in Kincardine has
443 students in the French and
English program streams, while
Mother Teresa School in
Walkerton, with 421 students, is the
largest school with an English -only
program.
St. Joseph's in Port , Elgin has
405 students in the French Immer-
sion and English programs, while
Holy Family in Hanover has 375
students this fall. In Formosa, 270
students are registered in the French
and English streams, while
Mildmay has 315 students,
Chepstow. has 174 and Teeswater
has 131. There were 4,529 students
registered with the board as of the
first day of school.
