Whooping cough
cases • increase,
no need to panic
There were 12 cases of pertus-
sis, also known as whooping
cough, in Bruce^arid Grey coun-
ties in September.
Although this marks a jump
from last year, public health
officials aren't ready to push the
panic button.
"Children , are routinely vac-
cinated against whooping cough
at two, four, six and 18 months,"
explains Karen Sweiger from the
outbreak control program at the
Bruce -Grey Health Unit.
•Children also receive a booster
at four to six yealrs of age. '"To
be on the safe side, parents
should check their child's im-
munization records to make sure
the vaccinations are up-to-date,
says Sweiger.
Symptoms include severe
coughing, difficulty breathing
and vomiting. It is often charac-
terized by a "whoop" sound
when the child 'is breathing in.
Young children under the age of
one are at the grealtest risk for
complications.
Sweiger says anyone who
suspects whooping cough should
contact their family physician
immediately.

COG votes on award recipient
The Lucknow and District Cham-
ber of Cpmmerce received two
nominations for its annual Com-
munity Service Award.
A secret ballot was taken at the
Oct. 5 meeting. The recipient of the
award will be officially announced
at the banquet on Nov. 19.
. All nominees and a guest will be
invited to attend to be recognized
for their community efforts.
Tickets for the banquet will be
available soon. Cost per person
remains the same as last year at $15
each. Social hour is at 6 p.m. with
dinner at 7 p.m. Along with the
presentation of the Community
Service Award, a special surprise
guest promises to make the evening
an entertaining one.
An operating budget for the COC
will be prepared at the end of the
year, to assist members of the COC
in determining what type of fee
structure to put in place for 1995.
The current fee structure includes
advertising for the various
promotions throughout the year.
The COC has been discussing,
throughout this year, the need for a
different structure to interest
businesses, other than retail, who do
not benefit from the downtown
promotions.
Plans are in place for the pre -
Christmas promotion. The tree
lighting ceremony is scheduled for
Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. This year's Santa
Claus parade, a joint effort with the
local Kinsmen club, is set for Dec.
2 at 7 p.m. Free skating and a visit
with Santa and Mrs. Claus will
follow at the arena.
The question . of retailers
remaining open on Friday evenings
is one that comes up for discussion
time and time again. At the Oct. 5
meeting, where 14 members were
present, there was a strong ,recom-
mendation from retailers attending
that businesses in the downtown
core give very serious consideration
to keeping their stores open every
Friday night between May 24 and
Dec. 31.
This is an effort to strengthen the
retail sector by having some con-
tinuity on evening shopping. Al-
though . the benefits may not be
immediate, it was the consensus of
opinion that in order to draw shop-
pers to the village, continuity is a
must.
Plans are underway for a "Spring
Thaw" event on Mar. 4, 1995, with
agriculture spokesperson Ellen
Lowry. as guest speaker. This event
will act as a fund-raiser, identity
builder and membership drive for
'95.
The COC meets regularly on the
first Wednesday of every month at
7:45 a.m. at the Mayfair Restaurant.
