To the editor:
We are not the least impressed
with Mr. Steckle's last letter. His
method of dealing with problems
can only be considered immature.
First he seeks attention by
publicizing his horrific waste of
time and taxpayers dollars on a
personal crusade to bring back
legalized whippings and beatings
into our society. Then he finds out
that not all of his constituents agree
with•his views and remind him that
this isn't one of his campaign
,promises he made for which he was
voted in. He then proceeds to throw
what can only be described as a
tantrum and publicly calls his
constituents names (bleeding
hearts), and lets.themknow that he
intends to ignore their views,
feelings and his responsibility and
obligation to them as their MP, and
continue with his crusade against
their wishes.
He mentions that perhaps it is
time to introduce a Charter of
Responsibilities and Obligations,
perhaps in this he is right, especial-
ly if it includes our government
officials.
Congratulations
to volunteers
for dedication
To the editor:
May I extend congratulations and
thanks to the many people who
helped to make the seventh annual
Heart and Stroke Celebrity Dinner
anoverwhelming success. Janet
. MacKenzie, organizer, has, once
more, done an excellent job and I
commend her for her expertise and
stamina in arranging every detail so
perfectly. Janet is indeed a role
model in the field of volunteering.
From the first strains of the
delightful dinner music to the final
clean-up, the support of the people
of Kincardine and the surrounding
communities is the power behind
the .event.
Since it'would be impossible to.
. • mention everyone •by naive, I need
to say a blanket "thank you" and
"God bless you" to all: the staff -at
'the Embassy, the many businesses
who donated door prizes, Doris
Bradley, for the dinner music.,
" Celebrity servers from the field oft
medicine, Norm Dunsmoor, for the
use of his P.A. system, Dr: Barr
and the other' speakers,the news
media, past patients of Dr. Barr's
and all dinner guests. Every ticket
bought realized a $7 donation to the
Education and Research component.
of the Heart and Stroke Foundation
of Ontario. South Bruce Chapter of
that organization is grateful for your
ongoing 'support.

TO THE EDITOR
History teaches us that corporal
punishment was taken out because
it was not working, not because
there was no longer any crime or
violence because of it. Too many
innocent people were being made to
endure this tortuous' punishment
without just cause.
If Mr. Steckle was as determined
to spend as much energy, time and
taxpayers money working on a
solution to the many other abused
systems such as our welfare,
medical, educational as well as our
unemployment problems, not only
would he finally be living up to his
campaign promises to his
constituents but to this country as
well.
If our laws are not being en-
forced, then start by seeing that
they do get enforced. If incar-
ceration is not working, then start
by, returning our penal institutions
back to jail and prison status
instead of Holiday Inns. Bringing
back physical punishment into our
schools would only be destroying
the programs already in place, to
teach problem solving and anger
control without using violence.
Canada is still known as one of
the friendliest and safest countries
in the world, even over those that
sanction corporal punishment.
Introducing more violence into a
society, supposedly, to help get rid
of already existing violence in it
just is not logical.
If you ,wish to have your say
against Corporal Punishment but
have not seen any of the circulating
petitions against it in your area, just
drop a note saying you disagree
with corporal punishment, sign your
name (and any friends or families
who agree) and mail to Frank
Moore, R.R. 2 Zurich, Ontario,
NOM 2T0. He will put it with the
many others to go to parliament.

my wife of 25 years is from there.
I currently live in the Kitchener
