Three seek re-election in Lucknow
by Pat Livingston
Lucknow voters will see throe
familiar names on the ballot come
election clay Nov. 14.
Reeve Stuart 12eavie said he will
let his name stand for the position
of reeve. "We've got a few things
started that I would like to see
finished," he said, when announcing
that he would seek another term.
Councillors
Only two of Lucknow's four
ciiuncillors will seek re-election for
another term.
"I've enjoyed the last three
years,". said Lynn Peck. "The first
three years are a learning ex-
perience. If I get a chance to get in,
I'll be able to do more because I
understand more now."
Peck said she hopes there is an
election in Lucknow this time
around. "People take more interest
in finding nut about the candidates
if they have to vote."
"I'm declaring myself a can-
didate," said Lillian Abbott when
she was questioned as to her inten-
tions.
She too said "It has been a lear-
ning experience the last three years.
Perhaps I can make more of
contribution in the next term."
After seven years o'n council,
George Gibson's name will not
appear on the 1994 ballot.
Gibson cited his "workload" at
F.E. Madill as being instrumental in
his decision.
"It's been'a fun time, but it's time
for a change," said Gibson,
Along with Peck and Abbott, Ken
Fischer was a new face to council
in 1991.
"I will not run again," said Fis-
cher. "1 enjoyed it, but it takes
more time than I can give it."
Gibson and Black run for Ashfield reeve
by Pat Livingston
As of Monday, Ashfield
Township residents will be going to
the polls to elect a reeve for the
next term.
"It's time to move up or out,"
said Deputy Reeve Paul Black,
during a telephone interview, when
he said he would seek the position
of reeve in Ashfield. Black has
been on council for nine years, the
last three as deputy reeve.
The current reeve, Allan Gibson,
now in his 20th year of municipal
politics in the township, said he"1
stand for •his fourth term as reeve.
"It's been a busy • year; but very
interesting," said Gibson, who. is
also Huron County Walden. "You
see a lot of things happening that
you don't realize when you are
sitting on county council. It opened
my eyes," said Gibson, who es-
timates he has attended around 250
meetings this year.
Councillors Paul Frayne and Ben
Van. Diepenbeek will let their
names• stand for re-election; while
Gwen Fisher has decided to take a
hiatus from municipal politics.
Frayne was new to council in '91.
He said it takes more than one term
to really understand the workings of
local government.
As a member of the Phase II
arena committee, Frayne said, "It's
interesting being involved fin new
projects." He'd like to he around
when the arena gets started next
year and see its completion.
Van 'Diepenbeek referred to his
first three year term as being "well
worth the experience, saying "I've
enjoyed it and will run again." .
"At this point in my life, Fisher
said, "I'm not going to run. That's
not to say I won't go back again."
Fisher is mother to three children
between 8 and 13 and believes it is
important to keep her children busy
and be involved with -them. "If I'm
going to be on council, I need more
time to devote to it."
•
• She summed upher three year.
term as "rewarding."
Kinloss establishes deputy -reeve office
by Pat Livingston
'Kinloss Reeve Jim Boyle will
seek•another term in that position.
"I enjoyed my first term around,
and we didn't have too many
complaints. I'll try to help -the
township the best I can," said Boyle
when he was asked his intentions.
Councillor John Husk will register
. for the position of deputy reeve this
• term. Although Kinloss has never
had a deputy reeve, the township
meets the criteria of having more
than 1,000 electors. '
"I've enjoyed my first term," said
Husk. "I'll give it another three
years. "We've done a reasonably
good job, with no increase in taxes,
and got.a lot done in three 'years."
Brian Wolfe willalso let his
name stand for re-election to coun-
cil.
"This was my first term and it
was interesting," said Wolfe. "Ki-
nloss has a high rate of involvement
by,ratepayers in their politics."
•
"At of now (Sunday), I'm not
going to run again," said Councillor
Erlma Jean Haldenby. "I've got too
many irons in the fire and need a
rest."
Haldenby did indicate that she
would be interested in returning to
a position on council in the future.
The other council seat was held
by Clifford Fielder, who resigned
that position early in September,
due to being relocated by }tis
employer.
A race for reeve in West Wawanosh
by Pat Livingston
In the, 1991 election, the mun-
cipality of West Wawanosh
Township had a complete new slate
on council.
The current reeve Bob Hallam
and councillor Walter Elliott have
stated their names will be on the
ballot for the position of reeve
come Nov.' 14.
Both were brief in their com-
ments. "I'd like to carry on for
another term," said Hallam and
Elliott wants to "give it a whirl."
Ron Snowden, after one term on "7'11 stay out of the race this time,
council, said, he will be running but when things settle down, I'd be
again. "We got . lots of things interested in getting back into it
cleaned up. There are areas we've (municipal • politics)'•', said
started in that I'd like to see Chisholm,,
threut?h," said Snowden. Richard Foster will not stand for
re-election this term. "I enjoyed my
one term, but I'm not going to run
again," said Foster.
Alex Chisholm said his current "Everyone should take a turn as a
employment results him in being civic duty. My term gave me a
"all over the place. It's difficult for good insight as to how municipal
me to make meetings and that's not government Works and it' was very
fair to the ratepayers." 'educational," said Foster.
Two current councillors will end
their terms with this election.
