Elston ends 13 -year career in politics
by Bev Fry
Murray Elston, Bruce Liberal MPP will be changing
his colors from Liberal red to Bruce Energy Centre
Ltd. blue.
Elston, 44, who has served as the riding's provincial
member ,of parliament for the past 13 years, will be
stepping out of politics Oct. 15 to become president
of Bruce Energy Centre Ltd.
In a surprise announcement Monday, Doug Fletcher,
current president of the Bruce Energy Centre as well
as president of the Canadian Agra group, told
reporters at a press conference Elston had accepted
the position of Bruce Energy Centre president.
He will be responsible for the planning, develop-
ment and marketing of the Bruce Energy Centre
industrial park, located adjacent to the Bruce Nuclear
Power Development.
"This was an opportunity I couldn't refuse," Elston
said.
He said it was the chance to make sure there were
would be business opportunities available in this area
"for our children", a sentiment he has voiced a few
times in the past.
"It's an opportunity to make sure jobs are
developed. I have a chance to put something solid
behind speeches I've made." •
Elston added the Bruce Energy Centre is one of the
finest locations for industrial deve'opment around the
world."
He said his goal was to make sure .that anyone in
the business world who didn't know where the Bruce
Energy Centre and Bruce County was, would find out.
"I don't want people to think I'll be an industrial
development officer for Bruce County, but if things
work for the Bruce Energy Centre, Bruce County is
going to benefit."

Although Elston's constituents won't have represen-
tation in the legislature after Oct. 15, (he didn't think
Premier Bob Rae would call a bielecuon), Elston is
assembling a handbook with phone numbers for his
constituents.
Workers at his constituency office, in Kincardine,
said they are still trying to sort out whether the office
would stay open part time or full time after Oct. 15.
Currently, one full time and two part time workers
are in the, office five days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m.
"A decision will be made before Oct. 15," one
worker said.
Elston said prospects for the Liberals look good. He
expects an election to be called in the spring.
"It's going to be a tough election, but the Liberals
are. in good shape. It's an opportune time for me to
leave."
Elston's position as Opposition House:Leader will
be filled before he leaves.
He said he had not really been looking at leaving
politics when he was offered the position with Cana-
dian Agra, early last, week.
"I was pretty sure I'd be going (running in the next
provincial election) again, but I knew this job oppor-
tunity was a once in a lifetime chance."
He said Liberal leader Lyn MacLeod was told late
last week of his intention .to leave politics.
"She was sorry. to lose me as part of the or-
ganization but in this business politicians should never
be so self centred ... there are a lot of good people in
this constituency who can represent us in Toronto."
Elston mentioned former Liberal MPPs Ross
Wicher, Eddie Sargeant and Murray Gaunt who came
before him.
"We've had a pretty good run of individuals,."

tour last weekend. Barrett says his work is a result of a communion between the wood and

Blood on uniform:
clean up or change
by Jim /Brown
Players and on-i'ce officials get-
ting blood on their uniforms during
a hc)ckey game can no longer use
the blood stain as a "badge of
honor."
Dave Black of Lucknow, WOAA
referees' committee chairman, told
the annual meeting of the as-
sociation last week that referees
have been instructed by the NRCP
program to enforce the blood rule.
"Players or officials getting blood
on their uniforms can no longer
take part in the game until they get
their luniforms cleaned up as best
they can, or replace the sweater or
the part df the uniform with the
blood on it," said Black.
He said this is to do with risk
management and AIDS as well as
hepatitis `B'.
"If an official has to stop a fight
in a game, and someone gets cut,
and he is sending your player off,
thaOs why he's doing it," said
• Black.
Stick measurements
Black added that stick
measurements will now take. place
in the referees' crease, following a
request for stick measurements.
-He said if a team requests a
measurement on the curvature of a
stick or any piece of equipment, the
referee will go to the dressing .
room, he will come back out with
the stick gauge, he will measure the'
stick or the pad in the referees'
