A crop of 'enthusiastic newcomers have brought their talents to schools in the area. Brookside Public School boasts the most new staff members, with three new teachers and a new teacher's assistant. • . ' Saltford resident harry Grail has been h'Ired full-time by Brookside to teach . Grades • 3 'and 4. He described the children as "energetic, full of ideas and fun to be around. I'm really comfortable with them." Grail has worked, at schools in Brucefield and Seaforth and ,this is his fifth year as a teacher. His extra -curricular involvements will include coaching volleyball and two -pitch. • Grade 1 and 2 students will be taught in the afternoons by, Susan Elston of Belgrave. "I like the primary age. They're fun and ask lots of questions: They want to know everything," she said. Last. year was Elston's first as a teacher and she handled Junior and Senior Kindergarten at Walton Public School. Lucie Turcotte-Lapaine brings seven years of experience to lier part-time post as a French and physical . education instructor at Brookside. Brookside has 317 children en- rolled, about the same as last year, said principal Rick Whiteley. The kindergarten -classes are quite,.large, with 59 children enrolled. Lucknow Central Public School (L.CPS) has a new vice principal this year. Tim Burkett brings 22 years of experience as an educator to th'e post. • "The board moves VPs around so they can share their expertise. And it's good for us too.to see different places," Burkett said. He expects working at the small school will allow him to teach more than he did at other schools. "At a Large school you focus more on administrative tasks. Here I'll assist students one-on-one or in small groups if they're having • problems in certain subjects." The Kincardine resident .raved about the school. "The kids are great, the staff is super, .,and the parents I've met have been very supportive of the school." LCPS has an enrolment of 294 students this•year, up from 280 last year. ' - ' Lucknow and District Christian School has a new part-time teacher 'with a rich teaching background. John Visser taught ,in Holland for 26 years before moving to Listowel a decade ago. 'Since then his pur- suits have included owning a res- taurant, teaching English as a second language courses to new immigrants, . and working as Susan Elston, Larry Grail and Lucie Turcotte-Lapaine are new at Brookside. "I like that age because you can tell them a little bit more about life than spelling and histoy. You can make them prepared for life," Visser said. He loves kids, he said, and they are the same all over the world. Children have become more outspoken since he began teaching. "Thirty-six years ago, kids hardly dared saying anything. Now, they're more lively," Visser said. Due to a small kindergarten class this year and a:large graduation class last year, the school's enrol- ment has declined to 69_ this fall from 85 last' June. The enrolment at .St. Joseph's school in Kingsbridge has remained pretty„ . much the same at 107 students. There are no new staff members at the school. Tim Burkett is new at LCPS and John Visser teaches at LDCS.
