As the public health dietitian at the Bruce - Grey -Owen Sound Health Unit; she understands women's concerns ab.out weight gain during menopause. But she is also worried about women becoming preoc- cupied with their weight. t'Women can feel a lot of pressure to shed any extra pounds they gain during menopause when, in fact, this weight may actually be good for them." "While it is true that some women will gain a small amount of weight during menopause, this is no cause for alarm," says Bumstead. The extra weight may actually decrease the risk of osteoporosis by placing more pressure on the bones and helping to reduce bone loss. Some women gain between two and eight kilograms (five to fifteen pounds). This weight gain is often centered around the abdomen. Bumstead says health officials are not sure why some women gain this weight. One theory is that menopause creates an imbalance of hormones that slows down a woman's metabolism. This im- balance causes women to gain weight even though their diet and exercise patterns have not changed. "A little extra fat tissue can also be beneficial because it produces a natural form of the hormone estrogen. This extra estrogen may reduce symptoms often associated with. menopause." "For same women this small weight Lan can be difficult to accept", concedes Bumstead. "But really, it is much healthier to accept this change rather than to place yourself on a strict diet. No matter how much the diet industry would like you to believe that their programs work, the facts show that diets don't work." Bumstead says there is growing evidence that repeated dieting (weight cycling) can be harmful to your health. The better approach is to' strive for a healthy weight by eating well and including enjoyable exercise every 'day. This sensible approach to weight loss helps you look good, feel healthy and energetic, and focus on things more important than dieting. According to Bumstead, menopause is a chance to stop and take a look at your eating style to see how it measures up. Try this quiz and see how you do. ❑ Do. you try to choose lower -fat foods more often (i.e. meat trimmed of fat, chicken without skin, lower fat cheeses, frozen yogurt)? O Do you choose whole grains more often (i.e. whole wheat breads, bran muffins, whole grain cereals, rollsand buns)? 0- Do you have at least one dark green or orange vegetable or orange fruit every day? ❑ Do you try to limit beverages that .contain caffeine? 0 Do you limit how many alcoholic drinks you have? If you answered "yes" to most of these questions, keep up the good work.
