It is nice to see the harvest
coming off - now if we could get a -
few days of hot weather all the
farmers would be a lot happier. We•
must have some happy cats in the
Ripley area if everyone is buying
their cat food locally.

Are you a hidden allergy sufferer?
by Megan Boyes
AAAAAACH000!! Have you
had a cold in the last few months,
or maybe just a few sniffles, or a
stuffy nose and itchy eyes that
seemed to linger for weeks? Well,
your cold -like symptoms may have
actually been allergies which hap-
pened to strike when the trees and
flowers were blooming. In fact, you
could be part of a growing segment
of the population in Ontario that
suffers from allergies and doesn't
even know •it.
A recent Decima Research survey
conducted for the Allergy/Asthma
Information Association (AAIA)
shows than up to 10 per cent of the
population could be hidden allergy
sufferers. In Ontario, the survey
showed that at least 6 per cent of
the population, or 500,000 people,
may be hidden allergy sufferers.
In Ontario, summer is the worst
season for allergies. Up to 25 per
cent of. Ontarians report allergy
problems in the summer. Chances
are, if you're a hidden allergy suf-
ferer, you have already experienced
allergy problems this summer.
Allergies affect a reported 6.1
million Canadians annually, or over
30 per cent of the population. The
AAIA is especially concerned that,
with allergies so prevalent, many
people still rely on relatively inef-
fective treatments.
Survey ,results, show • that some
allergy sufferers have tried to
relieve their allergy symptoms by
unusual methods such as taking a
shower, having a cup of tea or even
going outside for fresh air. While
many allergysufferers may feel
better having a shower, they're still
not dealing with the root cause or
consequences of their allergies.
The best way to deal with aller-
gies is to go see your doctor. Your
doctor is able to diagnose your .
allergy problems and possibly sug-
gest medication's, such as presrip-
tton or off-the-shelf antihistamines,
to deal with your allergies.
Remember, there are no prizes for •
those who try to tough it out. If
untreated, chronic allergies,
especially among children, can lead
tomore serious health problems..
Talk to your physician.
The Allergy/Asthma Information
Association is recommending that
allergy sufferers see their doctors to
get their allergies properly assessed .
and treated. For more information
on allergies contact the AAIA at
(416) 439-8616.. (Megan Boyes is
the Ontario Regional Co-ordinator '
for' AAIA). ' •
