HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-08-31, Page 7New curriculum touches all students by Pat Halpin "We're hoping to light a fire and that it will burn in the schools and spread," said Doug Goar of the workshops on the Common Cur- riculum presented at Northport School over a twoday period last week. Goar explained that the common curriculum is a new document that will affect all students in kindergar- ten to OAC. It has been described as "outcome -based education", and presents a radical change in the way tea ersand their students will ex rience learning. Goar said outcome based education is "more or less working backwards" because teachers first decide what they want the students to learn, then find ways to get to that goal. Traditionally, the cur- riculum has focussed on a set amount of material and required the students to master that content and pass related examinations. Last week's workshops were open to both elementary and secondary teachers, though the work -to -rule campaign now affecting secondary teachers meant participation was largely limited to the elementary panel. "It's the fust time the county has offered a summer institute," Goar said, noting that the key speaker was Ray Ward. Ward was described as "Ontario's guru on out- come -based education". His topic was "Making sense out of the Com- mon Curriculum." According to supporters of the new curriculum and outcome -based curriculum, new methods are re- quired to meet the needs of a rapid- ly changing business world and of a global economy. The workshops at Northport offered teachers a chance to examine sample cur- riculum and look at the practical aspects of integrating the new materials with different learning styles in the classroom. The common curriculum is being phased into Bruce County schools according to Goar. He said there will be, "pilot projects" on the new curriculum, but teachers may introduce a unit or two as they become confident with the material. In. the meantime, the steering com- mittee is working at integrating the common curriculum with a set. of goals or outcomes across the sys- tem.
