marijuana
plants
seized
in Bruce
by Scott HilgendorlT
More than $150,000 worth of
marijuana won't make it to the
streets.
Two fields were searched
Saturday and Monday and OPP
seized 200 plants which were
burned at the Kincardine
Township dump on Monday
afternoon.
"As a result of tips from
Crime Stoppers and resulting
aerial surveys an investigation
was launched into the cultivation
of marijuana in our detachment
area, " Kincardine OPP Sergeant
Bob Brigger said.
Brigger led an investigation
which included officers from
Kincardine and Goderich as well
as the OPP Drug Enforcement
Branch from Mount Forest and
the OPP helicopter from
Brampton.
A search of two fields, one in
Bruce Township and one in
Kincardine Township, confirmed
what aerial searches detected.
"We've taken $150,000 [of
marijuana] off the streets," Brig -
ger said.
The crops were close to being
ready for harvest.
The largest of the crop was
found in a farmer's field in
Bruce Township on Monday.
"My understanding of talking'
with the landowner is it was
being .grown without his'
knowledge," Brigger,said.
On Saturday, a smaller crop
. was found in a farmer's field in
. Kincardine Township.
Both are unrelated.
OPP Staff Sergeant Al Neville
said local farmers shoald- be
aware of people coming into
their fields and planting
marijuana without them
knowing.
No one has been charged for
planting either crop but Neville
said there could be charges
pending.
The investigation 'into
marijuana' cultivation is con-
. tinuing.
OPP are encouraging people to
call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-
265-3787 if they have any infor-
mation about suspected
marijuana growth.

DHC site selection is `sensitive' issue
by Andy Bader
The "very sensitive" issue of
where the new Huron -Perth District
Health Council (DHC) will be
located has taken its official first
step.
Diane Aitken, chair of the DHC's
Site Selection Committee, admitted
that there are a lot of interest
among various communities about
the proposed site, but first a
concrete list of criteria must be es-
tablished.
"It's going to be a tough decision
eventually," Aitken said. "But first
things first. We want to make the
criteria very clear cut with which to
base our decision on."
Earlier this month, Aitken issued
letters to a ' wide range of com-
munities who expressed interest in
being home to the DHC last year
when the final stages of forming
one took place. Now, she is asking
for the proposed criteria, or feed-
back from those affected, on what
the DHC home should entail before
Sept.. 23.
Four key components wilt be
involved: accessibility, central
location; availability of suitable
facilities and availability of ap=
propriate services.
One suggestion from the Site
Selection Committee itself is that
the DHC office should be ap-
proximately 3,000 -square 'feet,
include a bodrd room Targe enough
to accommodate 20 - 25 people,
four private offices, a reception area
suitable for two staff, a utility room
for copiers and other equipment
along with a library and a file
room. The office must also be
wheelchair accessible, provide
parking space for 20 - 25 vehicles
and be well lit to provide security
following evening meetings.
Aitken, who sits on the committee
with Dave Gower, Annabel! . Thom-
son and Judy Kipfer, said it was her
personal preference that a vacant
existing building be used for the
new office, providing a suitable one
is available.
"If one is available, let's put it to
good use," she said. "That way, we
(the DHC) will be operational much
faster."
She stressed that the decision is
still nowhere near finalized, and
said that the committee may find it
more feasible to build their own
office.
Once the criteria has been set,
Aitken said the basic geographic
area will be pinpointed, and once an
executive .director is hired to
operate the .day-to-day ins and outs
of the DHC, this person will help
negotiate for the site based 'on the
background obtained by the com-
mittee.
DHC Chairperson Jeff Wilbee
admitted a number of "get ac-
quainted" meetings have been held
as the newest and last provincial
district health council develops. A
site selection is. one of the main
priorities, but the initial one at this
time is the search for an executive
director. He expects that person to
be hired by the end of the year.
Wilbee,..of Stratford, added. that a
