Reminiscing about a full color trip into the imagination
by George Walker
I traded away my comic. books a
long time ago. 1 sometimes wish I
still had them. It's not for the
dollar value many of them might
bring, but because for me and every
kid, comic books were a full color
trip 'into the imagination. In a
comic, anything was possible and
• the good guys (at least in myday)
always won.
Some of the first comics I owned
featured funny cartoon animals.
This came from the fact that I grew'
up in front of a T,V. set. I not only
wanted to see Daffy Duck get
blown up, I wanted to read about it
too.
There were still other characters
who existed only in comics. I
laughed at the antics of the Fox and
Crow. ' In comics, the lower
animals talked, dressed and acted
like people. It was a wacky world
for a kid learning to flex the
muscles of his imagination.
When a boy gets • older, it's
goodbye funny animals. They're
for little kids. Bring on the action
heroes and the male bonding stuff.
My comic book hero was
Blackhawk.
Blackhawk had already been
around for a long time when I
discovered him. " His roots went
back to World War II. With his
own group of fighting men, he had
faced the axis powers. His friends
were called, quite naturally, the
Blackhawks.
Two more
weeks of
summer
freedom
The Sentinel's roving reporter
took to the street to get the reaction
of some students when informed:
"There's only, two weeks left until
school starts." •
Anne Yungblut, of Ripley, is
"not really" looking forward to
going back to school. The
summer went by quickly for
this. Grade 6 student who en-
joyed spending time at their
cottage In Muskoka, visiting
Science North and attending a
family reunion.
"That's nice" was the per-
funt:tory reaction of Richard
Smith of Dungannon, who's
"kinda happy" to be returning
to classes. This Grade 5
student at Brookside spent his
• summer playing baseball and
taking swimming lessons.
•E e
Kelsie Alton is "happy to go
back to school", where Mrs.
Young will be her teacher at
Brookside. She had a fun
summer visiting her Nanny's,
going to Toronto and doing
crafts at home prepared by
her mom. Kelsie also took
swimming lessons.
Stacy King, a Grade 3 student
Is "very happy to go back to
school" because she's a new
student and Is looking forward
to making lots of new friends.
Her summer centered around
spending time with friends she
has already made.
Ricky Andrew thought It was
ok that there's only about two
weeks left until school. He's
been busy working with h s
dad and playing baseball on a
team that's doing "real good."
The Blackhawks were a comic
book United Nations. There were
Chuck, Olaf, Andre, Stanislaus,
Chop -Chop, Hendrickson and
Blackhawk himself. The guys even
had a mascot, a black hawk named
"Blackie". The Blackhawks
changed with the years and finally
each of the ' guys , became
superheroes. All that is, except
Blackhawk. I figure he didn't want
to wear a funny outfit.
• 1 bought my first Blackhawk
comic in 1966. My family was on
vacation in North Bay, Ontario.
From then on, 1 was hooked. I
eagerly forked out' my mom's
twelve cents for each Blackhawk
adventure. I even had a pet catfish
that I named after one of my
favorites. But my pet wasn't tough
like a Blackhawk. He succumbed
to an undisclosed illness.
Comic books were a big part of
growing up for me. I'd go down to
the variety store on the corner of
my street. The brown wood news-
stand seemed like the biggest one in
the world.
The grown up magazines lay 111
piles in front of my favourite part
of the news-stand. I would sit or
kneel on Life , magazine or the
Enquirer (it was in black and white
then) to get a look at my favorite
comics. I'm sure the variety store
owner didn't like it much, but I,
and many another kid, was lost in a
wonderful world.
Today comics don't cost twelve
cents. There are specialized comic
stores that sell to collectors. They
make a good dollar doing it, too.
Comics aren't just for kids
anymore.
But there's still a child inside
each of us. We know that
Superboy's parents still live in
Smallville and the Robin didn't.
really die. There is still a Justice
League of America with all our
favourite members in good
standing. ,Most of all, I know that
somewhere the Blackhawks fight
on.
