The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-08-24, Page 3Pay tribute to W. Wawanosh native
A West Wawanosh Township
native, Harry J. Boyle, was honored
on the weekend with the unveiling
of a plague recognizing his suc-
cessful career as a broadcaster and
writer.
Ed Brophy, of the St. Augustine
community, made the presentation.
The following is a transcript of his .
presentation:
Harry was bom and brought up in
St. Augustine, Huron County. His
early years. were spent on a farm
and later at the St. Augustine store
during the Great Depression.
After a number of years at radio
station CKNX, Wingham, Harry
joined CBC in 1942 as a farm
commentator. Five years later he
was supervisor of CBC Network
Programming, a post he held with
distinction until 1967.
In 1968, Harry became vice chair-
man of the Canadian Radio -
Television Commission. His
contribution to Canadian broadcas-
ting was marked by the presentation
of the John Drainie Award in 1970.
Harry's career as a writer has
been every bit as impressive. In
addition to numerous radio plays, a
stage play and a musical, he has
written seven books, most notably
Ilomebrew and Patches, which won
the Stephen Leacock Medal for
Humor in 1963; and the extremely

successful The Great Canadian
Novel. Among his published works
are: With a Pinch of Sin, The Luck
of the Irish and Mostly in Clover.
This last work is being featured this
summer at the Blyth Festival Little
Theatre.
As a writer, Harry J. referred to
the joys and adventures of boyhood
as well as the trials of the Depres-
sion years. He referred to the
qualities and values that existed in
rural communities in catty days -
neighborliness, respect, genuine
caring, common courtesy and a
strong sense of right and wrong.
Harry recalled the 'early days' as
a time when there was a great deal
of merit in the art of `making do'
or `waste not want not'.
Obsolescence -was a thing never
heard about in those days. Things
just wore out and were patched and
repaired into new usefulness until
they vanished.
Flour and sugar were brought by
the hundredweight, and the sacks
were bleached and made into
workshirts. When the collar wore
thin on one side, it was reversed.
Their days as shirts, done, if there
was enough'material left, they were
cut up and hemmed into dish
towels. Eventually they became
cleanil. ags in the house and later
they pupped up in the driving shed
for the men to wipe their hands on
when they were working with
grease. Some of them 'were used to
stuff broken windows in the stable
when they didn't feel like sparing
cash for new windows.
It is ironic that the early pioneers
of West Wawanosh Township were
such great proponents of 'waste not
want not'.
. Now theproposed land waste
dump site in West Wawanosh
threatens the very existence of St.
Augustine, Donnybrook, and other
rural communities.
Harry J. Boyle has been referred.
to as a "...farmer, newspaperman -
broadcaster with a touch of his Irish
forebears on the . tip of his tongue
and a touch of genius on the tip of
his pen.' Harry is all of these and
much more.
