Media helps publicize
Rwanda relief efforts
The United Church of Canada is
asking for the help of the Canadian
media in getting information to
church members about how they
can contribute to relief efforts in
Rwanda.
"Unfortunately during July and
August we . know that many
congregational offices are closed•for
the holidays," explains the
Reverend Randy Naylor, acting
General Secretary of die General
Council, `..frying to communicate
quickly' with more than 4000
congregations during the summer
months is next to impossible."
"We know that many of the
United Church's three million mem-
bers are watching Uie nightly news
and want to know what they can do
to• help," says Naylor. "We hope
that by getting this message out
through media we can let them
know there are ways to respond to
this horrific situation."
So far the United Church has
contributed close to $100,000 to
relief efforts in Rwanda. In an-
ticipation of Uie continuing response
by United Church members to this
tragedy, an additional $15,0(0 in
emergency aid has been ear -marked
for Rwanda.
"As the United Church is not in a
position tO.organize its own relief
efforts in Rwanda, donations
received by the United Church for
Rwanda go directly to a fund set up
by the World Council of Churches
to provide humanitarian and emer-
gency assistance to Rwanda,"
explains Naylor. That fund has an
objective of 8.9 million dollars
(US).
United Church members who
wish to contribute to. relief efforts
in Rwanda should indicate this on
their cheques which should be made
out to The United Church of
Canada. Cheques may be mailed
irect1y to The United Church of
anada, Division of World
Outreach, 85 St, Clair Avenue East,
Toronto, Ontario M4T 1 M8, or they
can be forwarded through local
United Church congregations.
