HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-08-17, Page 5Speaking about dogs and cats
by George Walker
If you want to get a good ar-
gument going, here's what you do:
Don't talk about the G.S.T., stay off
sports and by all means, avoid the
political situation. Just talk about
dogs and cats.
People take vigorous positions
either for or against our most com-
mon house pets. I am going to be
as objective as possible, or else the
fur will fly.
Dogs are "Man's Best Friend."
Our canine friends are loyalty per-
sonified. If your dog were a person,
he'd do anything for you. You
might even get him to co-sign for
the sizeable bank loan yqu're after.
That a boy, Rover.
Cats are an independent sort.
They like to roam around and get
into things: If kitty has a schedule
book, your name is in there, for
some 'quality. time." Then, it's off
to wherever their four feet take
them. .You've got to envy those
footloose felines. A pocket pager
might be a good gift for your cat.
Stay in touch, kitty.
If you look around, you're sure to
notice dogs and cats who are
marked in similar fashion. Some
have spots or other peculiar
markings. 1 figure this could cause
problems. Suppose pet "A" who
lives on the other side of town, gets
into trouble. Pet "B" who has
similar markings, gets picked up by
the authorities. It's clear-cut case of
mistaken identity: Pet "B" should
get a smart lawyer.
If you want a pet to entertain by
doing tricks, call your dog. A dog
has a great repertoire. They can
beg, roll over or fetch things. A cat
might be game for a couple of
tricks, but it has better things to do
with its time. Bring a dog to your
next party, but include kitty. Both
dogs and cats have entered our
language. If you're really tuckered
out after a hard day, you're "dog
tired". A worn book is said to be
"dog eared". We all know abut
those "dogs days" of summer. An
American cartoonist came up with
the term "Hot Dog" after noting
their resemblance to Dachshunds.
But consider our friend, the cat.
There is. "kitten on the keys", which
is cute. Someone with -a style all his
own is .a "cool cat". "Cat on a Hot
Tin Roof" was a popular play and
movie, back in the fifties.
After that, our feline friend gets a
bad rap. There are words like
catalogue, catalyst, catapult and
catastrophe. These words have
nothing to do with cats at all. But
they do keep the popular pet's
name before an adoring public.
Dogs and cats are really a lot like
us. They have their own individual
personalities and some are real
characters. A child learns valuable
lessons from the first pet.
Therapists have said that a dog or
cat can have tremendous effect on
the life of a lonely soul. Our dogs
and cats deserve all the love we can
give.

We would like to thank the many
employers who placed job orders
with the office. These job orders
not only increased the employment
opportunities for area students this
summer, but also provided them
with valuable work experience that
will be of benefit to the student for
many years to ' Come. Financial
independence is also gained but
even more importantly it .builds
self-worth and self-esteem. We also
appreciate the support from arca
businesses and agencies during the
several promotional events or-
ganized by the CEC-S.
The Lucknow Sentinel was also
yery cooperative in publishing our
news articles, which helped to keep
the community aware of the ac-
tivities happening within the office
this summer. The "Student of the
Week" articles were also a great
success. We feel that this is one of
the reasons why job orders had
increased from last year. We hope
this endeavor will he continued in
the future. We really appreciate
your support!
The students who registered with
the office, all 375 of you, also
deserve a pat on the back. Not only
did you help support some of our
promotional activities, but you also
faced us with many challenges that
made this job very satisfying and
rewarding.
• Thank you again to everyone who
made the Ooderich Employment
Centre for Students a success!
