nothing good in there.' Now they
know wetlands make water quality
much better in the area. Marshes
take pollutants out of the water.
Wetlands are a very good ecosys-
tem, provide a good habitat for fish
and waterfowl. That's important for
hunters. and fishers."
Spotting Purple
Loosestrife"
FLOWERS: Five or six, long,
pink/purple petals With many
flowers along its spike.
LEAVES: downy, with smooth
edges attached directly, to the stalk.
Arranged opposite to each other and
pairs alternate down the stalks at 90
degree angles.
STALK: Square or six -sided,
woody with several stalks on
mature plants..
Things To Keep In Mind
Purple loosestrife is available for
sale. Do not buy it. Even "Sterile"
hybrids such as Morden Pink can
cross-pollinate with wild purple
loosestrife to produce seeds. Purple
loosestrife seeds are present in
some wildflower seed mixes --check
the label before you buy seed pack-
ages.
Purple ldosestrife should be
disposed by: 1) putting all plant
pieces in plastic bags (vegetation
rots quickly in plastic) and taking
the bags to a sanitary landfill site.
If the landfill site in your area
requires bags to be broken open,
use the second option; 2) drying the
plant parts in a sheltered area and
then burning them.
Composting is not advised, as
seeds may not be destroyed and the
thick woody root will take a long
time to decompose.
,Be aware that your clothes and
equipment may transpon the small
seeds to new areas. Stand in a
garbage bag and brush off your
clothes and equipment before
leaving the site. Wash muddy e-
quipment thoroughly in a bucket
and pour out water in a graveled
area where seeds are not likely to
germinate or sprout.
Wetlands provide habitat for
many native song birds, waterfowl,
mammals, amphibians and fish
which- depend on wetland
vegetation. Wetlands are also home
to many rare and delicate plants.
Take care not to trample or damage
native vegetation when controlling
purple loosestrife. *Copyright 1993

Help ensure we have safe, clean water
Imagine a summer without water.
No lakes. No water slides. No hot
tubs. No pools. No beaches. Al-
though this isn't a very' likely
scenario, health officials are looking
for the public's help to make sure
we continue to have, clean, healthy
water to enjoy our summer pas-
times.
When the weather begins to warm
up, we aren't the only creatures that
like to swim in the water. The tiny
bugs that we share the water with
mean you could be returning home
from the beach with more than sand
in your shoes. These bugs can
cause a number of ailments from
itchy rashes to upset stomachs. The
Bruce -Grey -Owen Sound Health
Unit advises bathers to watch out
for signs of unhealthy . swimming
areas.
Public swimming pools are usual-
ly safe but swimmers should watch
for dull, cloudy water. Any pool
that is unclear, scummy or foamy
should be checked beforeyou or
your family jump in. Unacceptable
conditions should be reported to the,
operator and the local health unit
called. Even when the water ap-
pears clean and clear, swimmers
should ' avoid swallowing surface•
water.
Spas and hot tubs can be a great
place to relax --more then a few
little hugs have been known to kick
up their heels in the warm water. If
your hot tub is maintained regular-
ly, bacteria shouldn't be a problem.
Regular maintenance includes disin-
fection and frequent dumping of the
water. Look . for the same signs as
you would look for in a pool to tell
if the water is fit for relaxation.
Public beaches are checked on a
regular basis by the Inspection staff
at the Bruce -Grey -Owen Sound
Health Unit. If the conditions
become unsuitable for swimming
they will be posted as unsafe. There
are a lot of reasons why beaches
may be posted as unsafe. Usually
an advisory is issued when .the
bacteria count exceeds provincial
guidelines. Popular swimming spots
in towns and cities often experience
higher bacteria counts• because of
their storm drainage systems.
Make sure that the water you and
your family splash around .in is
clean and healthy. It is just as im-
portant as following water safety
rules. Teach your children the signs
to watch out for to make sure the}r
next clip doesn't leave them with
more than a refreshing feeling.
Sometimes a 'little "footwork" helps In any sport. Marg Nettleton (centre) watches closely as the
bowl approaches the cat while her opposition indirectly tries to steer the bowl closer. The ladies
were taking part in the lawn bowling tournament, hosted by the Lucknow Lawn Bowling Club,
and sponsored by the Lucknow Legion. (Pat Livingston photo)
