A bidden marijuana harvest may be in your corn fields
•
by Nellie Evans
Is there a crop of marijuana
growing in your field'?
Many farmers don't realize their
field of corn is being used to
propagate marijuana, says Bob
Humphries of the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) in
Clinton: •
Marijuana is often planted near
corn on the south side of fields and
along creeks, an RCMP fact sheet
confirms. Marijuana can be detected
by looking for trails, unusual traffic
in the arca or generally anything
suspicious.

possible in southwestern Ontario
because of ideal weather conditions.
According to Exeter OPP Sgt. Terry
Devine, marijuana growth in the
area is at a "normal" level.
' "It's not more than usual. That's
pretty common," he said.
Yet Exeter OPP 'has been busy
lately raiding sites of marijuana
resulting in one charge of growing
the plant in a residence near Kippen
and the destruction of 97 raw plants
in Stephen Township, near Grand
Bend. ,
"That's a significant amount,"
said Devine.
Exeter OPP also received a up
that marijuana was being grown in
Hay Township but investigation
revealed nothing. Police also
destroyed six plants being grown in
Usbornc Township.
"It's no more prevalent than the
rest of southwestorn Ontario but
commercial operations are on the
increase," said RCMP Constable
John Henderson.
Last . year, the London RCMP
drug squad pulled 7,000 marijuana
plants with a street value of over $5

RCMP Corporal Blake Giberson
of the Sarnia detachment said
marijuana cultivation is increasing
because the grower either wants to
save money or make it.
The value of marijuana plants
vary with maturity, said Henderson.
Although marijuana plants are not
harvested until September, nine to
12 foot plants have the potential
value of $1,000 each.
Marijuana's street value can be
between $2,500 and $3,500 per
pound for marijuana buds, he said.
Marijuana leaves, which are used to
make oil.; can reach a value of
about $20 per gram.
Humphries said there are two
types of marijuana growers:
recreational and commercial.
Recreational growers use
hydroponics while commercial
growers cultivate and care for the
crop like a farmer.
