The robbers split the $700 take three ways. , Goderich lawyer Mike Donnelly, who was defending Campbell, said there is "no adequate explanation of why this occurred," adding, "When he [Campbell] went in, his intention was to get money, not do harm to anyone, although that's a reasonable consequence of going in there with weapons." Campbell gives .the impression of being "extremely remorseful," Don- nelly said. "He appears to understand the predicament he's in and the harm he's caused." He asked Provincial Court Judge Garry Hunter to take into consideration the fact that Campbell has been in jail already for three and a half months. He asked for a sentenceof two years less a day, pointing out that "with the time he's served in %kir ..i•: +l. Campbell has no prior record. Grant Schafer, from Kitchener, asked for the ' same sentence • for Sanderson. Sanderson comes from a broken family, Schafer said, and a few years ago his brother died of cancer. "His [Pre -Sentence Report] in- dicates serious problems with un- resolved grief over his brother's death," Schafer said, adding that Sanderson also has alcohol and drug abuse problems. He has one prior conviction, from July 1990, that involved possession of stolen property. Sanderson is "not beyond redemption," Schafer said. "It would be foolish of me to try to•rninimize the charges," he added. There were weapons involved and the "infliction of very serious in- juries to the proprietor [of the gas station]." But Sanderson also pleaded guilty and "saved the vic- tim the ordeal of taking time off from work and reliving what must have been a nightmare." Sanderson, who wasalso in cus- tody for three and a half months, "realizes the seriousness of the offence and accepts responsibility," Schafer said. Vale agreed with the proposed sentences, although he admitted many people might see it as "the low end of the scale in view of the terror they wreaked that night" on Crumb and his wife by simply walking in, as any customer would do, and "administering the brutality they did that evening." Hunter also ordered that the two be put on probation for three years and ordered not to associate with each other, Beldman or the victim and his family, and prohibited them from owning or handling firearms, ammunition or explosives for the rest of their lives. Youth assaulted in bed An 18 -year-old Lucknow youth was physically assaulted in his bed on July 24 after someone else at the apartment opened the door for three other people. The incident occurred on July 24 at 2:30 a.m. when the three woke the 18 -year-old and•he was punched. A 20 -year-old who also lives at the apartment, attempted to break up the fight and was also assaulted. Police were called but the suspects were gone when they arrixed. The two went to the hospital, leaving the apartment secured. At 3:20 ' a.m., a resident ' in a neighboring , apartment heard someone yelling and then a "bang." The police were called and found the aparunent door where the as- sault tookplace, kicked in. Two intoxicated males were found inside, sitting in the apart- ment. Both were arrested and charged with break and enter with intent, One was a 19 -year-old from Kin - I • loss Township. The other was a 21 - year -old from Wingham.
